December 2016 Observations and Model Discussion for the Pacific Northwest

Recommended Posts

I am reporting what the models show. Likely won't be widespread. C-zones areas are probably the best. Mt Vernon to North Bend.

You chose to live in Covington after living here all your life. I watched the weather here for a year from San Diego and knew the good snow spots in King County. Also thought I would like rain. My bad. :)

Got the snow part right though. If its so important then definitely pick wisely.

Yo guys I got 5 inches so far

The 18z continues the improving trend around Christmas. Nice GOA ridge / SE ridge setup in the 5 to 10 day period. Sad thing I've been so right about this winter so far and yet have almost nothing to show for it.

You have too admit this entire two week period has been a dissapointment for King County. All of that potential wasted. Having us warm up before most of the precip arrives is even more tragic.

No doubt we have been totally f ucked here. I'm still happy about the big picture though.

Been a emotional day.. First time in 27 years i went and picked a Christmas tree without my woman but me and my son made the best of it and had a good time. Its been a real test as a father dealing with all this. Dont want to sound like a wimp but life is so short. All who have a wife or significant other go give them a hug and spend every second with them like its the last!!

.

Best wishes to you this Christmas season. Nothing wimpy sounding about that at all, it really is important to make the most of the time you have with those you care about because it won't last forever.

I have admitted many times I screwed up when I chose this area. There weren't nearly as many resources for doing climate research when I chose to move here. That having been said there are setups that treat this area very well, and some winters are big. Just hasn't happened recently.

You lived here... you could just drive around and see it in person.

Why would freezing weather in December hurt the crops?   The crops doing pretty good in the Midwest and its much colder for much longer.

News just broke that over 1/2 of the plains wheat crop has winterkill damage.  That probably means a lot of alfalfa was killed further north as well, particularly where they had wetter than normal areas ahead of the cold blast.

True, I'd still never choose to live down there.

I would never live in Seattle. Bellingham or Olympia perhaps

Wow that sucks. Maybe typically there is more snow cover which would insulate them?

It is expensive up here. I just love seeing Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains though. Seattle is more cosmopolitan to me. Portland has its charm at times.

I do like the water and the mountains up here... its all around you in King County.

That can partially help but it comes down to whether it can protect the crown from freezing.  If that has emerged from the ground then it is only a matter of time if it is covered in snow when it freezes.  Once the crown freezes, the plant no longer has growth control and dies soon after.

Hmmm, airmass has not moderated hardly at all today in the Gorge. The Dalles is currently sitting at 16º dp 12º. 12z models had them up into the upper 20's by now.

I smell a messy commute tomorrow morning for the PDX area before the changeover.

Cold Season 2023/24:

Total snowfall: 26"

Highest daily snowfall: 5"

Deepest snow depth: 12"

Coldest daily high: -20ºF

Coldest daily low: -42ºF

Number of subzero days: 5

If the spigot were turned on that would definitely be the case.

My preferences can beat up your preferences’ dad.

There continues to be a strong signal for NE Pacific blocking and SE ridge for the end of the year.

In the long run we get more snow than them anyway. Still doesn't change the fact we are on an epic roll of failure here.

Seattle has gotten so absurdly liberal I wouldn't live there in a million years. They police your garbage for crying out loud. That and the fact the city proper has a totally loser climate.
