My adventures today have taken me to Western Iowa. Bentley to be specific. 50° and very windy right now. If you looked at the sky, you'd think it was April.

Absolutely gorgeous out there. Brilliant sun and low (to hopefully mid) 50s. If this doesn’t get you excited for spring, not sure what will. In a normal winter (what’s that?), days like today would really bum me out watching the snowpack (huh?) take a beating. Certainly don’t have that problem this year.

When we had our "huge" 3 inch blizzard the other day, I did have a fairly large drift across my driveway where other parts of the driveway and sidewalks had been blown off with the 50 MPH winds.  I got my snowblower out for the first time since February 1st, 2016 when we had our massive blizzard, 18 inches with large drifts.  I don't ever recall with all the bad winters we've had over the years, an almost 2 year span of not at least using a snowblower once in a year. Hopefully I will have a few more opportunities to use it this year. 

I've been tempted to buy and even had an offer to buy one from our neighbor across the street that was moving, but in the end I never do buy one and am always glad I don't. First off I don't have any room for one, but more importantly I don't feel the cost would justify the amount of times I would have used one. This climate in our area for the most part doesn't justify spending that much money on something you might use 2-3x a year, and lately not even that much.

I got a good deal on it in 2009. I would typically use it 2-3 times a year. I would not buy another one. I think when it needs to be replaced I will just call someone and pay them.

What are your thoughts for Feb? The pattern is going to be loaded with cold but my concern for areas farther south is the ridge the keeps is trying to fighting back. I'm pretty sure the cold will try to overwhelm the pattern at times next month and that's when it'll be your best opportunity.

At this juncture, cold and dry or warm-up and rain continues to be what I'm seeing until maybe after mid-February. It's just difficult to get all the pieces in place at the same time right now.

28.0*F on my balcony. Wind is completely still, but it is humid to make it a bit colder. Every car is extremely frost covered. I'm glad I don't have class today, cuz that would be a pain in the a** to scrape.

Well on our way to near 50 today.   A local golf course is open.  Going to play 9 holes for my first time ever in January in Michigan.

We hit 47F here yesterday. 12” snowpack took a massive hit. I’d say I’m down to about 4-5” OTG. Fortunately that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon with the cold coming in.

The lake I live by is closed to ice skating for the first time since Christmas. Hopefully it refreezes tomorrow and Monday.

I wouldnt say snow starved...they have actually gotten more snow than you and some others on here, including my area.

Cedar Rapids put another 50 on the board this afternoon... the third in the last week.  My last bit of snow/ice on a shady part of the patio is finally gone.

I think he got it. Swiss Alps are getting slammed too. But that's another place I don't live so I can't get excited about them getting snow either. Nice spring day, got some yard work done.

Saw this graphic from WGN and it takes us back into the late 70's when the "Superbomb" paralyzed the region...

Earlier this week, the ICON model was picking on a short wave tracking across the area today/tomorrow but trending weaker as we got closer.  Nonetheless, some snow is falling across the LSE are and moving towards MKE with decent DBZ returns.  I'm interested to see how this will effect us here in N IL later today thru tonight as the LES may organize overnight tonight into NE IL.  There has been a lot of ice melt on Lake Michigan during this stretch of warm weather which has led to below normal ice coverage.  I hope the inversion heights don't cut back on this potential like it did back in December when we had a great opportunity.

 

 

 

 

 

All the higher rez models are picking up on a lake band developing tonight into Monday....let's see what today brings...

Splendid day today as I spend the day w friends at a party outdoors w temps on the very mild side. Dint get a chance to see my high for today, but it felt great. Just amazing weather for this time of the year.
