October 2018 Weather in the Pacific Northwest

How often do you see >3" in those regions though? It hasn't snowed in Central Florida since 1977, doesn't mean they are due however.

This seems a little off. Isn’t the Willamette valley’s climate quite a bit warmer than central Florida’s?

Of course parts of the Central and Southern valley had two 6"+ snow events in 2013-14, which is very unusual. Salem also had 5" on 12/14/16 and 3-4" on 1/7/17. In fact I thought everyone from about Wilsonville- south down the valley had 3-4" with that 1/7/17 snow event.

I think we have had this discussion before...but what better time to bring it back up with that time of year coming again.  Here is the list in terms of who is most due for snow when comparing what they typically get to what they have received:

 Most Due:

1) Seattle Metro area King County

2) Central/South Willamette Valley

3) Northern Half of Western Washington (Bellingham Area)

4) South Sound to Centralia

5) Portland/Vancouver Area

Dallas, Monmouth, Corvallis, and Springfield didn't have more than 3" in any of those events. Corvallis hasn't had an accumulating snowfall at all since March 2017, longest active drought in the entire PNW.

A couple hours before the Halloween activities and the radar looks better up here than down south.

Going to be close out here on the west side in Tigard. Looks like everything is heading for Jesse now.

Unfortuanly I put a damper on things today and stepped on a very long nail while putting the final touches on the display. Probably gonna turn into a zombie now. Suckers really hurts!!!! Going to ER in morning for the shot and whatever else they need to do.

Good times but the show must go on!!!

My max depth in December 2008. There was a Volkswagen Jetta under there somewhere.

Had a low of -2F as well. Sure was a fun stretch.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

My peak snow depth during December 2008 was around 20” in Orchards, northeast part of Vancouver, WA.

Eh, I think we topped out around 12-13" around most of Clark County. First on the morning of the 22nd and then again on the 24th. Drifts were locally higher in east county but I don't think any depths exceeded much beyond that on the valley floor.

Last time we had a 20" snow depth was 1/9/1980.

This is probably a question for Phil. Looking at the northern hemisphere 500mb pattern, it appears we are going to see some strong blocking in the Scandinavia region. Is this a pattern that is often a precursor to a strat warming event or at least a perturbed PV?

It would aid in a bottom-up wave-2 type perturbation of the vortex, yeah. Less in the upper strat, though.

In -ENSO years it’s a precursor to GOA blocking/cold temps in western Canada..more murky in +ENSO regimes but still better than not.

Yeah, that was a mistake on my part. I was thinking monthly total. Peak depth was a little over a foot.

Perfect night for trick-or-treating. Rain stopped around 5 and it was dry and a little breezy and quite warm. Streets were packed with kids. Very festive. Several houses were having adult parties in the garage and driveway and a couple were handing out jello shots for the parents in addition to candy for the kids. :)

The rain down in Portland looks like it moved out.   The I-90 corridor was in a favorable position this evening with rain to the south... the opposite is usually true.

Perfect down here!!! Foggers/ thunder and lightning machine and singing pumpkins all on line and the kids/parents loved it all including me. Back home my nest cams show very soggy monsters. Glad I wasn’t there!

Awesome!

Odd that is was dry most of the day at your house up here and then it was raining there during the evening.

We had light rain and drizzle for much of the day here and then it totally stopped before it got dark.

I'm quite bummed out by this weather. It appears the first two weeks of November will be just as boring as October has been.
