OMG! The ECMWF ensemble is even better than the 0z...particularly for keeping the cold going forever. Another major cold wave shown in the 10 to 15 day period.

Maybe you won’t have to move after all.

 

I’d be interested in someone with more knowledge/data looking into +ENSO winters that delivered in the PNW and what that may have statistically entailed in subsequent winters. The post-1950 correlations are clear but I’m curious about some of the early years, especially those in the 1860-1945 period.

 

The relative homogeneity between the late 19th century tendencies and the 2018/19 one is quite striking.

They're probly focusing too much on EUG and areas down here that haven't been impacted and likely won't.

 

My friends from Eugene sent me a few pics of the dusting they got. At least some parts around there did alright. Better than us anyway.

What do you think the odds are we get a major heavy snow event for the entire area? Talking 6-18 inches like what has been popping up on some of the runs.

 

I think a cold ending low coming up from the SW at the end of all this would be the most likely time for that.  Until then I think relatively localized events will play out well for different areas.

I do know one thing this area over here is wayyyy over due for a big snow event all at once like the old days. Big heavy ovee running events used to be far more common.

This pattern only really started the night before last. I'm sure you will score at some point if its anywhere near as long lasting as advertised.

2008 started out kinda weak on the first snow event also.

Still can’t complain too much. Being on the edge of it has been nice. Some huge snowflakes at times, and enough to turn the roof and most of the grass white.

I hope someone here has an internet link to radar returns so we can keep an eye on it.

Seems like the band over Clark County is moving further northeast if anything. But a new band seems to be organizing to the SE of the metro area, over Clackamas county.

Remember the old days when the NWS would issue a sws talking about a long period of cold and snow for a couple weeks? That was back then with crap models and they still were right most of the time. With this pattern shown you would think they would say something. They must really have people breathing down there necks telling them to not say a word.

 

Prolonged periods of cold/snow lasting a couple weeks are pretty rare.

And that's about it for the past 40 years (isolated outflow areas excepted).

 

3-7 days is pretty typical historically.

Hey at least I got to watch the sunset as the band fell apart and retreated east. Cold clean refreshing air and a pretty sunset, it could be worse.

The Seattle NWS has removed almost all mention of rain from the forecast for the next week now.  Just a couple of periods say snow or rain.  This upcoming trough / Arctic outbreak could be awesome.

Still 25F here.  I'm a couple miles east of Arlington so the pesky clouds bank up against the foothills and moderate the temperature.  If it clears out I wouldn't be surprised to see single digits at all.

Again, Portland really thrives with any semblance of east wind. Is this cold really deep and impressive enough to do something like 2/12/1995 (where the cold was enough to give PDX snow)?

With that heavy snow cover and this cold airmass singles should be easy if it clears.
