March 2019 Observations and Discussion

I am aware of that spring flood outlook from the NWS, but it would still be nice to get some decent rains around here over the next several weeks to melt the remaining dirty snow piles still in parking lots and to start getting the grass greener here.

Seems like flooding is a bigger problem along the MS river. Not sure about rivers here such as the Cedar/Iowa river.

Very much enjoyed the spotter class. Not quite as familiar with thunderstorms, so learning all the terms and information was very useful. Also, didn’t realize until tonight that the reflectivity on the radar for the DBQ area is ~5,000 feet in the air.

How it is most places. The "holy Grail" for tornadoes is to get radar sup 500 feet. Couple of researchers have done it but for warnings it would be awesome.

Gosh, yesterday was a great day wx wise and we logged 2 consecutive 100% sunny days!  Today we'll make a run into the upper 50's with another fantastic sunny day.  #HappyHumpDay

Edit: The first true "pneumonia front" of the season is poised to hit tomorrow in the late afternoon.

My whole family has caught their spring colds. I’ve been down and out for a while but feeling better now. We’re makikg a run at 70F today. Probably won’t make it quite that high but it’ll be close with the SW winds riding over the buffalo ridge. That should get rid of some of the dirty snow piles that are left. Although some parking lots are going to have piles until May.

Plentiful sunshine and temps in the 30s. Reaching high temps in the delightful 50s today.

Have to watch the weekend as a front sags south of my area. It could bring unwanted hvy snow for SEMI. Local forecasters are calling for accumulating snow a real possibility. Bad timing as Springbreak vacation begins for many. Temps are expected to be in the 30s for highs and 20s for lows. Clears out on Sunday but temps remains very cold w 30s staying put.

Still feels pleasant enough. My average high has now reached 50F and low of 34F. Feels great and also the days are soooo much longer. Awesome indeed!

Marshall actually snuck up to 46F for about 90 mins, but today's already beating that. Too bad the next 3 days have to happen. We need the RN tho, even the road shoulders are a cloud of dust attm.

Green up? I’m still diverting snowmelt runoff away from my house. Lol.

It can be quite dramatic down at my LAT. A few springs back (2016?) we caught warmth plus T-showers combo. In about 48 hrs lawns went from dead brown to lush green. I grew up with seeing that happen but it was my daughter's first time. I remember her commenting on it. We're more than ready to see it happen now. Green-up, followed by worming out, followed by frogs singing in ponds or drain ditches. The traditional 1-2-3 of SMI transitioning..

I’ve been struggling with a cold for around a dozen days now. Maybe the longest for me ever. At least it’s warm now! Last I checked it was 64°. Warmest since sometime in October.

More perennials are sprouting and the grass is greenish in areas where snow was deepest. Need a few more drying days so I can clean out the barn, then it can rain.ha

Yesterday I noticed that the relative humidity (upper 20% range) was the lowest since at least October and maybe longer.

Had a few flashes of lighting and claps of thunder right before I went to bed last night which was well-timed.  I love falling asleep to the sound of rain and thunder.  It was another delightful Spring day yesterday as we topped out with a high of 59F.  Today we may break 60F but with more clouds.  Not at all that bad until later in the day when the good ol' fashioned "pnemonia" front makes its way down the lake after 3:00pm or so around here.

That must have felt great I bet. Here in Macomb, temps went into the 50s. It was a fab day to be outside w sunshine along w high thin clouds.

Currently 41F w cloudy skies. The showers have ended.

Btw: yesterday at the pkg-lot, as I was going towards my car, I saw in the open distance (not too far away from me, maybe 500FT) a "Dust Devil" and looked like a weak tornado. It was spinning around carrying dust up in the air. Didn't have time to take a video. It disappeared quickly. It was awesome to see though.

Here is an i.e. of what I saw yesterday........

The weather station I have has a website and an app that I can use to look up my weather station's data from anywhere. Love that feature!

I was looking back at this month so far and it's pretty crazy to see the flip we've seen(pretty normal in March of course).

March 2-4th had highs of 15, 7, and 15 and overnight lows were below zero.

Since the 8th of March, every single day has been above freezing for highs, and since the 13th(last 16 days) we've had every day above 50 except for 4 days and those 4 days were at least 44 degrees. Normal this time of year is now in the 50s, so it's been nothing to extreme, but it's all relative to where we started the first few days of March.
