One thing I've tried to practice in a not so epic winter (like this one so far) is patience. Even with all of the skill and knowledge we now have, weather can still be highly variable and often unpredictable. I don't get overly excited about long range fantasy storms, nor do I lose all hope when the same boring pattern looks permanent. Today is January 14. There is still plenty of time for exciting winter weather to make an appearance. Many of my most epic storms here and in the KC area have occurred in February and March. We don't know how those months will play out yet. For now, I just do a courtesy check of the models maybe once every day or two, check my local 7 day forecast, and stop by this forum to see what the latest buzz is....and just being patient! Oh...and heavy drinking also helps....

It is a winter wonderland outside. Snowing at a very good clip and will continue all afternoon. Temps are dropping steadily. Currently at 26F. Roads are a real mess out there. Nearing close to an inch.

been a very warm January thus far. It's been the 3rd warmest Jan at Des Moines thus far (11th warmest at Chicago). Pretty big miss from the model forecasts which were issued around Christmas time. The models have been severely underestimating the Plains ridge this winter and overdoing the cold in the Midwest. See no reason for that to change, which is why I'm very weary of some of the solutions the models are spitting out which, in my opinion, are nonsensical to a degree. First two images are of the EPS forecasts from Christmas 2025 for the Dec 29 to Jan 5 and Jan 5 to 12 timeframe respectively.
