Western-WA is cloudier than the majority of the country 10 out of 12 months in the year. Lowest annual UV index of anywhere else in the lower-48.

It’s a very cloudy climate. That’s just a fact.

Wrong. Your “western Washington” definition is part of the Olympics.

No, it’s not. I know where the Olympics are. You can pull this data directly from the GHCN network if you’d bother.

But you have a whopping 10% more sun... so different!

Do you have a point?   Are you lecturing the people on here who know our climate like the back of their hand?    We all know what is normal.    Seattle averages 200+ dry days a year and has significantly more sunshine hours per year than most European cities.     You want to say that it should always be cloudy and raining here so we should not point out when its unusually cloudy and wet.    Its silly.    It is not always raining here.   Not even close.   Dry days are more common than wet days in Seattle.   That is climo.

Still not cloudy 10 out 12 months. 😂

averaging 200 days of that =/= 10 out of 12.

why do I even bother with this conversation

The cutoff is arbitrary. The threshold is right at 70%. It’s more like 60% on the east coast and Midwest.

There is actually a very distinct line... the difference between the Seattle area and the Olympic Peninsula is pretty significant.

It certainly has much to do with our incredibly sunny late spring through early autumn.  This time of year the gloom really sucks, because it is eating into our limited time that should be very sunny and dry.

Because you can’t read? Who said it’s cloudy 10 out of 12 months? Don’t understand the denial of reality in here.

A bit higher resolution but same idea.

Most of us like myself have lived here for 30+ years. I’m 36 years old. And someone is gonna really try to argue climo here from DC.

How could you possibly know which climates are cloudiest if you haven’t lived anywhere else?

Are you some psychic? Or just talking out of your arse?

That is what bothers me the most when it gets like this.    The completely disconnect between the long daylight and the weather.    Today could have been a December day in terms of weather... except the sun angle is 50 degrees higher and the day was 8 hours longer.    Just feels wrong when it becomes persistent.

We are very close to the same as Florida!   Minor differences.  Nice!   And Maine and southern Texas are exactly the same.   Great map.    😀

You haven’t even made it clear what it is you’re disputing.

Western-WA is one of the cloudiest climates in the lower-48. Unless you have some data that suggests otherwise?

Nature doesn’t care how you feel about it.

So what?   The sun still shines in Seattle and dry days outnumber rainy days.

And Seattle kicks a*s in terms of sunshine compared to most European cities.👍

That article had claimed western-WA was the gloomiest climate in the country.

There are subjective ways to define “gloomy” so it may or may not be accurate for everyone, but if we’re going by annual cloud cover percentage, it’s technically true.

That’s all I was saying.

And its hilarious that the criteria was Nov-Jan weather and based partly on length of day.     How is that an entire representation of a place?    The headline should read Seattle has the least amount of daylight between the months of November and January.      But that sounds pretty boring.  😀

One thing I will say for absolute sure is if you take July - Sept out of the mix Western WA is far and away the cloudiest place in the country.  Even with the very bright summer we are obviously still very high on the annual cloud cover scale.

Pretty sure I don't want to wade into this, but I found this interesting map quantifying "gloom" or "dreariness." From Brian Brettschneider like usual.

I fuckking love the PNW rain or shine, this place is beautiful as all hell. Our climate isn't for everyone, but it's the whole reason this varied biome is even imbued with the wonderful scenery it has; its clean air, Douglas Firs, vibrant mycobiome, abundant fauna, plentiful edible plants, natural rivers and estuaries, and alpine lakes and glaciers.

And it's certainly not worth fighting and throwing pot shots at one another. I feel like I'm the 50th one to say this in the history of this niche microcommunity, but seriously, can't we just sit back and enjoy the privelege we all share in living here and embrace it? 2015 or 1955, this place is a goddamn paradise.

I wouldn't trade our climate for anything (well, okay I'd take 2 more feet of annual sea level snowfall in the winter). I'm really into glaciers (and mountains and sunsets and forest and lakes and tall trees and more) and our cool weather with abundant precipitation is the reason that we have the only real glaciers in the lower 48. Sure there are a couple piddly ones in MT, ID, OR, and CA (excluding the somewhat larger ones on the volcanoes), but it's only in WA that we have in my opinion what is a truly alpine feeling landscape. And as compared to some of the areas further north with glaciers, we usually have at least a couple months every year to reliable get out and see/explore them.

What a place to live!

Even this last decade of "hot summers" down in Eugene would be a godsend for a large majority of the populated US. Most other places have to regularly contend with 80°F DP's or (god forbid 'and') air temps in the 100s. Aside from late June and mid August, the weather was just normal hot down there; 88-95 and dry as all hell. Bad for fires, great for an escape from NOLA or Phoenix.

It’s a very cloudy climate. That’s just a fact.

And the Snoqualmie Valley up against the Cascade foothills is way wetter and cloudier than Seattle obviously. Probably closer to the west slopes of the Olympics. The rain/cloud shadow effect drops off quickly moving east from the Seattle metro
