December 2016 Observations and Model Discussion for the Pacific Northwest

Just got back from visiting up around Parksville over the weekend. There was clearly a lot more snow virtually everywhere else on the island than in Victoria. It looks like the system a couple weeks ago brought snow from Nanoose Bay-north and the one this past week brought snow from Nanaimo-south. I wonder what it's going to take to get a low tracking over the Olympic peninsula, they don't seem to have had any trouble tracking to the south or north. Victoria managed to catch almost an inch of wet snow going into both mini-cold snaps, but much of it evaporated and 4" that disappeared almost overnight the previous Friday. Seems to have been maybe 1/2" here yesterday/early this morning but the switchover happened quickly. Better than anything in the past 4 years but far from even January 2012 (which tracked well south of here). The best chances seem to come when we get more significant upper level cold.

Holy crap. The cold air in NW WA has been decimated this evening. The SE wind is poison up there.

These transitions from the NW are the worst outside of favored areas for southern cold damming. I was pretty skeptical of this one but didn't realize how much of an underperformer it would be, even at the "snow belts" of this region.

Solid rain in the swamp. Sounds like some folks are scoring big time.

Enjoy it. Make a snowman for me.

Raining across most of the area... Bellingham to Olympia.

If we can get it to snow next weekend, a statistical five percent chance, I will be fine with the fact that past two weeks delivered nothing more than an inch IMBY.

Will more than make up for it, in my opinion.

00Z ECMWF was very disappointing.   It shows that it gradually gets cold later in the week but without much precipitation.

Looks like I have close to an inch new. Dumping huge flakes now. Biggest of the season.

I wonder what its doing closer to highway 26?   My sister has not reported in yet this morning.    It was snowing at Staleys Junction but it looks like rain now.

Certainly no shortage of moisture this morning!

Certainly not down there.   Front appears to have passed up here and radar looking much more sparse.
