It was. An amazing winter. Salem had 32" of snow and we had 37" at our farm near Silverton.

Wow!  I had no idea you got hit that hard down there.  That was a cold winter with snow here, but nothing like that.

I'm pulling for a GEM like solution on the ECMWF.  That would deliver the goods for everyone on here.

It's not that I'd rather be stoned during weather events, it's that I've never experienced that. It may very well turn out to be disorienting and distracting instead of ethereal and enhancing. That's my feel anyways.

No matter what, I'll always be happy as sh!t whenever the flakes start falling and the bolts start flashing

Reminds me of the sugar rush I had during my family vacation in the Philippines and we had a typhoon come in. I was only 12-13 at the time on the 30th floor of our hotel. Greenish skies, wind and rain slamming into the windows, and me coming on and off a sugar rush cause I was eating those sour gummy worms.

It was fun and NOT fun 😂 But was ultimately what led me into hurricanes and weather, and the appreciation/excitement for extreme weather.

A couple of things to watch are the ridge merge over the North Pacific and whether or not too much energy back digs into the Yukon.

dropping strong acid in my younger days in the early 2000s during a Noreasta/Blizzard in NH.  that was pretty D**n intense.  having grown up in South Carolina and moving up there to NH in my mid 20s it was the first thing I did when a major winter storm hit in December of 2000.  did it a few more times over the next 4 years while there.   since we moved up here from CA I have rekindled the flame a couple times in some big snows in the last 5 years.  when the going gets weird, the weird get weirder

Looking at SLE's snowiest winters, I'm surprised at the different in snow totals between Albany and Salem in January 1950. Salem had 34.9" while Albany had 20" more I think. Corvallis had 51.9". I wonder how much my location might've had, probably similar to Hillsboro's ~42". I think there was a newspaper article reporting drifts of 4ft-5ft in the Cedar Mill area as well in early February 1950 which is close to my area.

SLE's kind of crappy location, even for Salem it's pretty much the least snowy location in the area, it's also the driest spot for miles. The mid-valley was favored in an amazing way in 1992-93. I remember visiting family friends in Newberg around January 10th, we had 6-8" on the ground at our house, but once we got north of Woodburn there was basically nothing on the ground.

A repeat of that would be amazing. The mid-valley really is due I'd say. I know some places there did well in December 2021 and 2016 but I think other places have done much better.

Salem did pretty well in 2016. They probably had more total snow that winter than PDX. Though its hard to say because their snow data is spotty at best. Probably 12-15" overall, so pretty close to 2003-04, and not quite as much as 2008-09. 2016-17 reminded me a lot of 92-93'. Kind of a "poor man's" version.

We had around 18" of snow that winter though that was mostly because we got lucky on 1/10/17. 13" here while PDX only got 8"
