Pacific Northwest Weather - May 2023

Our February weather would have made a good December... March would have made a good January... April would have made a good February.  It was unusually cold.    Now May would have made a good June.

I actually quite enjoyed our March weather this year. Although it was several degrees colder than average it didn't feel gloomier than a typical March around here. Very continental feel with the deep troughing and 850s doing most of the heavy lifting (while shunting most of the precip well south into CA).

Would have been a nice cold January.

We here in gloomy Southern California would be glad to give you your regular climate back.

A lot of snow in the air here too. Even some sticking on the 10th and 25th here

We spend the afternoon in the Fairhaven historic district ( just south of Bellingham).  Cool fun location. Explored the buildings and shops. Of course had ice cream 🍨

Cloud cover this morning with some blue sky in between. Cool and breezy as well

I love that building!  Fairhaven is a pretty cool little part of town.  Will you guys be going to be down there today to check out the Ski to Sea festivities?  It gets very crowded but it is a lot of fun watching the teams coming in to cross the finish line/ring the bell.  I have a lot going on today, so I'll just be there long enough to watch my friend come in, collect my kayak and get out of there.

Zuanich is another good place, you can watch the cyclocross racers come in and do the handoff to the kayakers.  The kayakers launch off a dock across the marina entrance from the Hotel Bellwether.

A few of the local companies hire teams of "ringers" and can complete the race in about 5-6 hours.  Most of us "mere mortals" finish the race in 8-10 hours.  The hired guns complete the 5 mile kayak leg in about 40-45 minutes on surf skis, and the "mere mortals" do it in about 1:10 to 1:20.

I expect temps today in Tacoma area to reach around 72-75° range about a degree warmer than yesterday per wx stations. Skies should start to clear slowly but steadily around/after 12pm. Notice the range in temps predicted vs one particular exact temperature which I don't agree with. As Cliff Mass stated once we should be giving probabilities and temps in ranges instead of one particular temp/observation. I use many different weather apps, providers, sources for forecasts instead of one. TWC, AccuWeather, Morecast, Windyapp, Weatherbug, NWS pinpoint and Zone forecasts, Aerisweather, Weather&Radar (Wetter.com) and Forecast Advisor. Weatherpro is decent to.

March was fantastic. Would not have been a cold January, but it would have been a cold pattern in January….

I mean, obviously answer is yes. Whether it happens within our lifetimes is another question.

Beautiful cooling of the subtropical/off-equator NPAC and WPWP over the last week. Should make a big difference this summer, even though it’s a warm signal in the PNW during AMJ (though it’s a right-tailed distribution).

Also confirms the ENSO/low pass change is not a mirage. We have definitively left the La Niña regime.

Also holy smokes at that +IOD/+AMO. Not at all what we’ve come to expect in El Niño years during 21st century.

I’m back home in overcast Federal Way :(

That would of been fun to just sit back and watch the action though!

Clouds just dissolved here... a true burn off.   Clouds became thinner until they disappeared.  Wall to wall blue sky now.

If Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano does fully blow, I wonder what implications is could have on our climate?  We theorized what other's have may have done, giving us cooler periods in the PNW.  Hopefully people there have had plenty of time to get away.

OIP.4ZWySe6U_hqeQJT_oMcRegAAAA.jpeg

This really bears watching going into the summer, El Popo ain't no joke. Mexico City's a massively dense city with 20+ million in the CDMX, with additional millions within 60 miles around the volcano. If it gets worse, I really really hope people have a plan in place. It's essentially North America's version of Tokyo with Mount Fuji but more active.
