We are due for a track like this. Haven’t had a snowstorm track like this since Feb 2017. Even Kuchera looos good!!!

The 1974 airmass was legit though. 8 subfreezing highs and 6 straight lows in the single digits here. The lack of snow involved a fair amount of bad luck. Las Vegas ended up with over a foot of snow from that. You replay that blocking pattern 100 times and we probably come away from it snowier 99 times.

In the grand scheme of things most all of our winters just come down to 1-2 week windows of opportunity like that anyways. So if the separation between the good and the bad is just whether the mesoscale details like snowfall work out, then assessing  a winter's performance becomes a pretty subjective analysis.

Good point.  I just think if next winter played out exactly like that a lot of people would be unhappy.  The cold wave this winter was epic in its own right, but many don't appreciate it.  I think next winter will have a lot more blocking than 1973-74 did based on the recent extreme blockiness we've been seeing along with the +QBO / Nina combo.

Kind of ironic that 1974-75 was just the opposite here.  Big snowstorm, but no real cold.

I'm still pretty optimistic about my chances here over the next 5 days.  Most runs of most models show us hitting the magic combo at some point in there.

Looks like a more eastern blob of moisture is getting its act together on the radar.  Might yield something.

It just occurred to me, where the hell is Phil?  I admit I haven't been on the board as much for this round of winter mischief, but I realized tonight I haven't seen any of his alphabet soup posts in a while....

 

Currently 39 up here and getting the occasional sprinkles but mostly being shadowed by the Olympics.

There are a bunch of those coming up.  The ICON and GFS both show really good snows for Seattle albeit from different situations.

The GEM has a big snow just south of Seattle early next week.  It shows plenty of moisture for Seattle as well so the snow would probably extend north of this.

Yeah I'm here in Auburn near Pacific Raceways. I got excited when I heard some heavy rain just a bit ago but by the time I'd pulled up the radar to check it had already passed and there's nothing in line any time soon. Feels like the good stuff always goes West or East and I'm stuck in the middle
