March 2024 Weather in the PNW

12z Euro was encouraging.

Still time for it to improve... the crash didn't come until the end of the run and dependent on a very strong ridge aggressively moving east into the GOA.     Either way it seems the pattern is fairly progressive now which mean neither ridging or troughing should lock in for long in any one place.

Yeah, despite the big ridgy torch in the middle, it's looking like this month will end up pretty normalish for most of the lowlands.

Also remember it was the coldest first week of March in history for some places.   Ebb and flow.

The people who drone on and on about doing things in the rain are like the cocky jogger character on Family Guy.    Look at me... I am so tough... nothing bothers me... I love doing easter egg hunts and picnics and everything else in pouring rain.   😀

But then when it gets a little warm they turn into big babies.

Of course you can do everything in the rain and often have to because that is life.    Its just nicer when its dry for outdoor activites.

Cocky jogger guy reminds me a lot of overconfident big truck snow driver guy. There's always these idiots here who seem to think snow is an invitation/challenge to drive much faster than everyone else on the highway.

"It's just a little snow, not gonna let it slow me down like you p*ssies. Cuz I got this big truck with big tires and an even bigger ego!!"

These are usually the guys who end up in a ditch.

I will clarify that I am not on team palm trees, I believe all palm trees around here must be burnt down, they do not belong on the PNW.

There should be a Palm tree react @iFred

Dude sometimes when it's super snowy around here, crazy people with their giant trucks just come flying through the streets, doing burnouts, drifting, doing donuts in the intersection, and honking their horns.

They always have a couple random flags on their car too.

So much hatred for a simple form of vegetation that can obviously do well in our borderline Mediterranean climate.   I think the people who have so much venomous hatred just don't like to be reminded of the reality of our climate.   They want to pretend we are basically Montana.    😀

In the next couple of decades, palm trees might become more prevalent in areas like the south Willamette Valley.

Maybe.   Throughout the entire history of life on Earth the one constant is that vegetation is always changing.   And sometimes quickly.

The types of palms that can grow in this climate probably like places like Victoria BC, that averages one frost every five years or so, compared to Eugene which gets way more freezing nights.

Palm trees in the PNW don't care about frost.   Most are hardy to slightly below 0F.   That separates the west side of the Cascades from places to the east like Montana.

I figure the PNW gila monsters will eventually eat all the PNW palms and then we will never ever ever ever have to talk about it again.

there are some native alligators in Liberty Lake, they completely bury themselves in the lake bed and the winter under the ice and exist in suspended animation until late april

Yup, sounds about right. $20 says they have an AR-15 in the back for no reason as well. Grew up there and would never move back.

You grew up in Sunriver, and you'd still rather live in the Portland metro than here..???

Some preferences I understand, but some just baffle me.

To be fair it was Redmond, and I know it’s a bit different in the Bend area but culturally it’s all blending together much more these days.

The friends I’m still in contact with that never left the area are…different.

Weather wise I do miss the consistent snowfall and sunny days, but have grown to love the variance valley vegetation brings. Winter can be bleak tho not gonna lie 😂

My wife grew up in Klamath falls. She really loves the more lush vegetation of the west side.

Yeah, it’s worlds apart. I’ve had my fill of juniper and sagebrush 😂 Born on the coast, likely where we’ll retire eventually.
