Back home now after 4 awesome nights in the rainier area. Because we didn't check the models for a couple days, we went back up the mountain Saturday evening expecting it to dump snow on us overnight, which never happened to our complete surprise, it was mostly dry the entire night, until the morning we started getting heavy snow which continued til some point last night, and then it turned to off and on heavy snow, I'm not sure when the change of forecast happened on the models for Saturday night, it surprised us to say the least. We didn't summit rainier yesterday which was we didn't expect to do anyways, it was just a day for doing some more Glacier training in whiteout conditions.

 

This morning we experienced some of the most extreme weather we've ever seen, 10k elevation at camp Muir from 3-5 AM we were experiencing 100mph gusts with temps in the low teens, once we started decending at 8am the gusts were still in the mid 90sMPH and 110sMPH on exposed ridgelines, which was impossible to ski in without repeatedly getting knocked over by the wind, but it was beautiful once we got down to Paradise.

So for this Friday, based on models, the 850 temps appear to be around a +16. This is the lowest I'd like to see for a 90F+ in Portland (+15 can be acceptable if there is ample downslope winds. Temperature potential is 89 given a 1020 mb pressure (what said models are forecasting). However, downslope winds are expected which may make the true temperature potential higher. I'm still going to stick with 89 for now, though the true potential is at 92-94 (depending on wind speed) if 850s don't change.

 

May 28th, 1983 stayed below temperature potential (107F), and June 2021 at Salem already was cooling down at the highest 850s at sounding time, though the day before was a +0.2F above potential. If I had to guess, the 30.4C 850s weren't the highest at sounding time compared to earlier that day.

Talked to my ex-wife. Her parents live in Bville and I was worried the kids were up there. They are safe. Her parents live in NE Bartlesville and are ok.

I'm about 0.7" below normal for the year with 15.3" so far. So much better than last year when I had accumulated 10" of precip from Jan through the first week of May and was almost 6" below normal.

I’ve always wanted to see Alpha Centauri as well. I’ll get to see it when I go to Aruba later this month. The reason why it’s so bright is because it’s 2 stars right next to each other. The other being named Rigel Kentaurus.
