January 2017 Observations and Model Discussion for the Pacific Northwest

Good chance it starts as cold rain or mix many places until heavier/steadier precip drags snow level to the surface.

All the WSDOT cams from Olympia to Tacoma are out.   Perfect timing.

3.00" for the midnight measurement. A little mediocre for snowfall 01/09. But regardless I still expect January to be epic for monthly snowfall totals here even if the rest of the month goes at a regular pace.

27.15" now for January 2017.

Not looking good for me now, oh well, getting used to it.

Just not sure I agree.

Looks like a pretty good band getting organized a bit South of you heading your way.

Yeah radar and satellite definitely looks better than what I thought they would at this time.

I'm trying to look up the mesoscale analysis to see what 850/925 temps are right now but it's being weird on my phone and won't pull up. At any rate, surface temps in the low to mids 30 is encouraging as well. I'm already at 30 degrees here.

925's look to be right about 0C

850's are right around -3C to -4

Precip type also being shown as a (7) SN

Now I have real standards for snow.

Indeed. Based on what I've heard from long time locals this is a once in a 25/30 year winter.

06z NAM continues the trend of more precip at PDX. Starting  to show some pretty significant totals on  the west side.

Make sure the schools are delayed for two hours. We hardly ever see rain! Hahahahahaha!

Same here... 2 hours late.   Its 32.5 here with just a dusting of snow and 35 with light rain in the valley and now they delay school.

I just signed you up for a job at the Seattle Office of the NWS. Can you be wrong most of the time and then cook the book on temperatures so it looks like global warming? You're hired.

Whatever it takes to make it snow there for you poor swampers....

The vast majority of the concern was about precip making it far enough north, not temps. Same goes for the NWS.

Bust, but not for the reason most feared. The precip did make it further north than was being progged.

D**n...just 1-2 degrees too warm. So many marginal situations this year, and so few have broken right for many of you.  :(

The amazing thing is this system has plenty of precip. If this was snow we would easily be talking about a couple inches. Radar looking quite healthy this morning!

33 degrees and heavy rain. Wow

Yeah, this system on Saturday would have done the trick. Real bummer.

Only hope now is that somehow some precip can stick around as cold air filters down from the north today. Someone may still get a little if a CZ forms as atmosphere cools just a bit.
