Perturbed Member
Looking like we stay dry though at least early next week now. It has already been mentioned but I think we could see some pretty impressive low level cold building this week with a snow covered Basin, Gorge and now Portland metro. The source airmass is verifying pretty cold too with widespread 850s of -10 to -15C in the lower Columbia Basin. This is a sort of setup I have dreamed about living through. Yeah it is indeed a dream setup. I'm almost having difficulty believing it all worked out so well. Just doesn't happen that way here. Poulsbo Snowman
What does Boise average in a whole winter?Probably about 5 or 6 inches. I do recall, however, in 1983--just prior to Christmas, a historical arctic front came through and sat there for nearly 2 weeks. During that times, highs had difficulties reaching single digits and lows were in the negative teens much of the time. Oh--and we also had about 15 inches of snow off and on, which culminated in the largest snowflakes I've ever seen. Each flake was its own individual snowball. Incredible. 15 minutes of absolute bliss, which added about 2 inches of snow to the total. We had a quick warmup after the event, resulting in flooding all over the valley. Highs went from single digits to 50 in about 24 hours. My bedroom was downstairs in the basement, which was flooded for several days. The north end of town, by the foothills, was inundated with water for more than a week. Whole streets became rivers, which flowed into the downtown area--and ultimately ended up in the Boise River. If I looked around, I could probably find old pictures of the event.

Big storms are relatively rare there though since it's pretty close to being a desert.Oops. I gave bad info. You're right. Thanks for keeping me straight! Not sure what I was thinking of. But yes, Boise gets about 20 inches a year--but it's fairly rare to have more than 5 or 6 inches on the ground. Big snowstorms do not happen often in the semi-arid climate of Boise--which actually sits in a high desert. You would never know it was a desert because it's so green in the summer--in fact, Boise is known as the "City of Trees". But if you leave town to the south, you're in sagebrush and sand, which is great for Coyote hunting.

Bryant
Sounds like you live in an interesting microclimate. You should post obs more! This is my first winter here, so I'm learning more as I go. It's very sheltered from the North, so Fraser outflow can take a while to get here, which hurt me earlier this year. Bellingham and north whatcom county got dumped on while I sat at 37° most the night with heavy rain. I live at ~480' which has helped me in the past, New Years Eve being the most recent example. Bellingham was mainly rain unfortunately, with some non accumulating snow later on, while the extra elevation gave me 3.5" of snow. Seems as though I have some orographic enchantment opportunity as well. Still lots to learn! The squiggly lines are just there to highlight the terrain, and the blue dot is my location. Timmy Supercell
Boise averages closer to 18-20" a Winter. Big storms are relatively rare there though since it's pretty close to being a desert. Thanks, I thought something was off about that. 5-6"?? WUT? lol I know they get quite a bit more than Portland/Eugene does. Timmy Supercell
Yes. January 1950 produced 57" at SEA and 41" at PDX Haha, wow. So regional Jan 1950 was a big one I guess. K-Falls had 56.50" that month.
