July 2018 Weather in the Pacific Northwest

Recommended Posts

This landscape really is beautiful. I wish we had more conic evergreens like this. And the sky is a perfect winter blue...in July. ☃️

Flights to fake vacations are very short.

Perfect morning for deck staining!

Thanks global warming/cooling!

Woulda been upper 20's if not for UHI.

You’re on fire today.

Although definitely cooler than some previous runs... 12Z ECMWF still has Portland just under 100 degrees by day 4 and 5.

Apparently I’m where the blue circle is (according to the RadarScope app). Family says it’s much snowier here than in Seattle, so I’m guessing this is a good location w/ regards to the convergence zone during the winter?

You are west of I-5 and that close to the water?   Last year you circled an area that was east of I-5 and southeast of Everett.

If I did, then I must have screwed up. This is the same place I was last year.

BTW Tim, didn’t you say the grass was supposed to be brown and dying?

This area is greener than anything back home.

That's definitely prime CZ area, though areas further east are snowier in general.

I really want to. I’ve actually never been to Oregon before so it’s long overdue on my regional itinerary.

Maybe its been watered? Or its an area that stays wet. The valley floor out here is like that... stays greener much longer.

Of course that area is also on the edge of the infamous area that has been wetter than normal this year.

But the road side grass is turning brown even here now. Once you get out and about you will see lots of brown grass.

Areas south of Seattle are where the brown is. I know that without having been there recently...I work with agents in SW WA and OR, and most the listing pics have very brown grass :)

I guess there must be a relatively sharp north/south gradient this year.

Are there any particular places in Oregon you’d recommend I go to if/when I can visit? Always better to get that advice from a native than from some website. ;)

It's a beautiful place. Vast climate differences in the NE, SE, SW, and NW plus no sales tax with warmer and colder extremes (at least I'm assuming since e.g. Eugene's coldest temps are colder than the PS region).

No sprinklers or watering according to the family. They say it has been wet, which seems to confirm the existence of your “drizzle bubble”.

So maybe it’s not a fake map illusion after all. :)

As Tim will also attest, this year has been maybe the most north/south with precip that I can remember for the region. Definitely visit Pacific City, Eugene, Vista House near PDX, Cape Blanco, Wallowa Mtns, Bend/Sisters/Bachelor area, Steens Mtn in the SE, Grants Pass and the Rogue River. If you're coming in the Fall or Winter I will try to go to a College Football or Basketball game with you.

Its very real.

But like I said... that is probably an area that always stays green longer than other areas.   Could be close to a wetland.    There was lots of brown grass through Everett and Marysville along I-5 yesterday when we drove through on the way home from the San Juan Islands.    The wet bubble can only keep it really green for so long when its sunny and warm most every day now.   Very normal for mid and late July to have brown grass.

There is a creek that runs through the property, but apparently it dries up during the warm season. It’s dry right now.

There was definitely more brown grass in our family pictures from last year, so maybe this is just a greener year.

51 at PDX is pretty impressive. Gonna ruin our record hot month.

Not nearly enough. ECMWF is a blowtorch from Sunday right up into the very last day of the month. It's in the cards to string together 10 straight days of 90+ to end the month which is just insane right after last weeks heatwave.

Cold Season 2023/24:

Total snowfall: 26"

Highest daily snowfall: 5"

Deepest snow depth: 12"

Coldest daily high: -20ºF

Coldest daily low: -42ºF

Number of subzero days: 5

Been colder the past 2 days then I was expecting. Luckily the heat looks ready to come back this weekend and stay here for at least 1 week, likely longer. The 12z EURO shows highs close to triple digits on Tuesday and Wednesday for PDX. At day 10 it looks like ridging isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Possible, but pretty unlikely. Hasn't that only happened like a couple times ever at PDX?

Only takes 1 high/mid level/low cloud shocker!

Has there ever been a warm anomaly stretch like this in the Willamette Valley for this many summers in a row? I'd say at this point it's not all that out of the question.

Yeah I think a 10 and 11 consecutive days is it. Unlikely, but PDX is on a roll lately so it also wouldn't surprise me. Also working against some very dry vegetation.

First go to North Bend and help Tim set up his weather station.  Maybe show him how the filter on his camera works too.

Take it up with Samsung and their Galaxy phones!   There is no green filter.

PDX's high water mark is 10 in 2009. Prior to that it was eight.

And SMI is definitely something I think gets overlooked. It's certainly more relevant to me than coastal SST's.

Gorgeous day!

Dry air aloft behind the ULL to the north has allowed dry air to filter in and the marine stratus is disappearing even offshore.
