It will be in 7 soon and the SSW has come in two phases.  You can see the second phase just starting to kick in at the end of the loop.  this is the phase where the wind reversal will happen.

Thanks, Jim. I'd say this ups the ante significantly for late Winter cold/snow.

Don’t tell that to Jim. He will spend an entire post telling you you’re stupid for not believing in him. It’s Jim’s world and we’re all just living in it.

Do people still doubt the power of MJO zone 7?  I think the late Nov / early December cold wave was from that also.

This seems too simplistic.   The pattern resulting from different MJO phases varies by month and by ENSO.

True, but it's a very good tool.  I do know in general 7 is the best bet for cold in the NW without taking anything else into account.  Somebody posted some info a while back showing the MJO phases during our most recent Arctic outbreaks, and over half had the MJO in 7 or 3.  The little cold snap late last month was 3.

Yeah once u isolate the MJO/CCKW component from the low pass tendency it’s more of a phase 7/8/1 transit by late month.

Biggest difference going forward is no strat PV to augment the TPV and a more active MJO/intraseasonal cycle in general due to accelerating BDC in response to SSW.

So gradually more and more arctic cold should become displaced from the pole and bleed into the CONUS and Southern Canada as well.

Interesting we now have +SPMM/-NPMM and EPAC warming. Whereas it has been the -SPMM that has dominated this -ENSO cycle.

Well this isn't promising for PDX/Willamette Valley, but could be good news for Western Washington.

The early morning discussion says the weak low for tonight is trending further north and the PDX NWS folks are now going with the lower end of guidance in terms of snowfall. South wind is NOT the friend of Cold and SNOW! Poops!

Too bad, but having nws not on board is always a GOOD sign. Folks above 500’ should do well, maybe even better than previously expected as this thing is looking MOIST.
