Yeah, sort of the worst of both worlds this month so far with lots of warmth and mildness and clouds but not a lot of rain to show for it.

Yeah I had no idea either. Thought it was some explosion or a loud truck at first then I checked the radar. No rain just thunder.

That was fun! I didn’t see any bolts but thunder was close enough to shake the building and see the flashes.

Sounds like the inversion in play today is amplifying the deep bass of the thunder. Seattle looks to be in a good spot to try for a bolt.

Very weird day to get a thunderstorm. Just seemed like a typical gloomy day with some light rain at times. Usually I’d think a cold core set up would be the best way to get a decent storm this time of year.

Cutoff lows do cutoff low things. Usually by now we've lost the 4CH and the monsoonal moisture associated with it that seeds midlevel convection, but I think we're tapping into subtropical Pacific moisture as this ridge breaks down, so something's working out. These showers are starting to coalesce into a band. Maybe I can see a couple strikes out of this thing.

Thunderstorms on top of a marine layer is one of those west coast weather things that is unique, weird, and really cool. Who in their right mind would look outside and think the atmosphere is favorable for thunderstorms today?

My favorite of these setups is when the marine layer itself convects. It's a super rare phenomenon that usually happens only on the coast range, but in our most dynamic setups, parcels at the top of the marine layer/PBL become viably buoyant, and may even be lifted. Or, in the late Spring/early Summer when the marine layer is really starting to take shape and mixing is strong, trapped fingers of the marine layer, particularly ones deep within the mountains of the costal range where cool valley air is trapped easily, can be transformed into humid/warm parcels via surface heating, and can lift naturally due to uneven terrain/heating, and the low buoyancy of water vapor relative to N2/O2/CO2.

I remember that flooding event. I was out with my family and we left before every single way into Duvall was closed due to flooding. Had to spend the night at a friends house because we couldn’t get back into Duvall.

Had a couple rumbles from that last band but not as many as the first round a couple hours ago. The radar down south looks decent still…but we will see how it holds together.
