January 21-23 Wintry Mix Transition Event

Recommended Posts

Very slippery out there.

Not quite sure how tonight will shake out locally.  Temps are currently right around freezing.  Possible that there is a small dip with loss of daylight or when precip picks up again, but that's not a given.  The ground is going to be a disaster regardless, but just not sure the trees and powerlines will accrete as much.

Odd event this is.  Unusually high background pressures all around with virtually no organized surface low to speak of.  Because of that, winds will get pretty light in much of the icing area tonight into tomorrow.  Can't recall a good icing event with winds so light.  Maybe there's a reason for that, or maybe it is out of the ordinary but not impossible.  Those light winds will really keep the surface waa to a minimum though.  Warming will be driven more by the growing warm nose aloft and latent heat release from the raindrops freezing, along with some diurnal influence as we move through Tuesday.

It Will also limit power outages. Not a lot of wind for tree branches to snap on power lines because of the weighting the ice.

Crossed the 32 degree mark and hoping I don't look back for awhile. May not be forecast to be really "warm" here, but a great break and glad to survive without tree damages.

We’ll be in the high 30’s to 50’s. So glad we aren’t  “sweating the ice”.

Some pictures I had taken yesterday morning as the ice was wrapping up.

We have finally switched to snow after getting a glaze of ice this morning.  Models are not too bullish on accumulation... maybe an inch.

The snow did not last long.  Instead of expanding throughout the precip shield like models predicted, radar shows it shrinking as the temp gradually warms.

This was a big ol' dud.  For days models suggested some decent snow this morning, but it just didn't happen.  It appears there is some snow from near Dubuque to southern Wisconsin where the precip is heavier.

I am in the blue on Wundermap and to call this snow is extremely optimistic.

Actually since writing this it has become much more snow-like and then stopped. But it wasn't enough to stick anywhere there wasn't already snow.

Very thankful. It absolutely feels warm here now. Glad to hear the quiet sound of my furnace not running so hard.

Truly wanted to remark on how utterly dead all my grass and everything is now. That's one of the best cold stretches we have had here in a good while.
