Your new place? Do you guys have an HOA approved list-o-paints or can you spin the wheel and go? How much did it cost?

We had Certa Pro do some interior painting a couple years ago and they did a decent job. I went with them because they had a guy who was able to fix some water damage for time and materials and everyone else I talked to said I would have to find someone to do that work.

I got a bid from Certa Pro for my exterior but ended up going with “a guy with a truck” because he was less expensive and came recommended from someone I trust. He and his team did a fantastic job- pressure wash, scrape, caulk, primer, two coats of paint. House looks great. I can DM you his contact info if you’re interested. Not sure he will go to Everett but only one way to find out.

Yup. We were able to pick our own color but it had to go to the board for approval. I definitely have a serious love/hate thing for HOA’s. Some are pretty ridiculous.

As far as cost, it was subbed by the builder so I have no clue. Last time I painted a house was summer 2009, which I did myself and it cost me about a thousand bucks when all was said and done. It was a ridiculous amount of work and if I charged myself labor it would have probably cost me about 10k.😂

I have some very strong opinions on HOA's... I'm curious as to what good you see in them?

The benefit of an HOA is that your neighbors have signed an agreement that says they can be penalized if they park ten cars in front of your house. Whether you see value in an HOA probably depends on how much you value that “service.”

Amazing weather today, I think it was nature's gift to me for my 59th bday. Got pretty good conditions to climb Mount Hood, although the winds at the summit were around 40mph, forecast was calling for winds in the 20s which unfortunately did not verify. Here's a photo dump from our climb, sadly my camera fogged up little bit, so all of the photos are slightly blurry. 20240308-150325.thumb.jpg.1939d423f44688d82ff0fae95e448743.jpg20240308-150251.thumb.jpg.6d88793676f12bcbf28a0c230595b1f7.jpg20240308-150419.thumb.jpg.405a299e70d36a2283e91a36b66e448c.jpg20240308-152334.thumb.jpg.fe3a108b0a61900ae21417924dc4ba85.jpg20240308_154445116.thumb.jpg.a38fbb160fd1a9c0d100e7611fc8d4eb.jpg20240308_153331690.thumb.jpg.70ecfd55070126a12f85f8ee7a51d608.jpg20240308_153500909.thumb.jpg.3e063af42fec692d3a887ce5017c69e8.jpg20240308-152356.thumb.jpg.bec7f60c5b99cf83dd645a32eb17a018.jpg

18Z ECMWF AI version also shows western troughing after 300 hours.   Maybe the GFS is onto something.

Most of the arguments I've read supporting HOA's are like this... Very extreme examples. This rarely ever happens and if so it's even more rare that a reasonable compromise can't be met with the neighbor, after a polite honest conversation. I bet a lot of "examples" are people simply not trying hard enough to make peace.

This is probably the only sound example that I can see supporting HOA's... Though the "when administered correctly" is pulling a lot of weight here. Technically this wouldn't even be an issue if Americans weren't so concerned with silly things such as the continuity of their neighborhood or having to walk half a block to their front door.

Most of them suck, but some are good. I'd say the HOA is pretty good here, maybe a little strict but they help keep the town nice.

Actually, they keep the wealth with the HOA. Some of them are pretty pricey depending on the “amenities” they provide. My brother’s costs him $300 a month but they have a pool, clubhouse, landscaping and beer coozies.

This’ll be our first time with one in about 14 years and the only one we were a part of was run very poorly. Not particularly looking forward to it, but no one holds a gun to someone’s head. If you don’t wanna be a part of it, you can go live somewhere else.

Not NW, but I had no idea Bodie State Park (a minning ghost town in CA) is staffed in the winter when the long dirt road is snow covered and closed. Rangers staff it to avoid vandalism. It frequently has summer temps inthe 70s or 80s but temps drop rapidly at night. It has over 300 days of freezing temps and is often the coldest daily low in CA. It's over 8k in elevation on plateau, east of the Sierras near Mono Lake.

Per wikipedia look at that range of temps. Insane. Is there any place in the NW that is similar?

I’m not making an argument for HOAs, just offering an opinion on why people value them. I know I offered an extreme scenario but I was having some fun with a situation one of our posters described a couple days ago. I will say that someone who thinks it’s ok to park ten cars in front of your house will not likely be swayed by a polite and honest conversation.

I am in a Wikipedia rabbit hole right now... started with looking up sauropod dinosaurs because of a recent discovery in France that was in the news today and came across this chart.

It was still dry and sunny. Highs were in the 50s and even 50s today, wasn’t like it was -20. We were also wasting precious time to build snow pack and fill our reservoirs. Every dry day is a lost opportunity in this climate.
