I had 5.5” of rain this morning and picked up another .1” of red mud rain today for a storm total of 5.6”. This storm was able to suck up dust from New Mexico and Texas and rained down on us!

I'm happy to report that over the last few days, PHX and most of the valley has picked up anywhere between .25-.50" of rain, while that is a drop in the bucket for what mid westerners are used to, thi

Ended up with 3.41" storm total. Even better, not a lot of standing water anywhere so it looks like most of it soaked into the ground.

The HRRR would be fun, but it's likely overdoing the intensity of the snow here shortly after the change-over.

00z NAM & 3kNAM

The NAMs continue to be just a bit warmer than the HRRR, which matters a lot in this scenario.

I hope this can hit the Wisconsin Dell area hard. Would be pretty cool to have one more day of real winter riding at Cascade. And they're doing a thing where if you have a pass from ANYWHERE else you get a free lift ticket.

Models are fluctuating, wildy at times, in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area.  This is due to the precip band and cold air arriving here at about the same time, so any tiny change in one or the other can change our snow total by inches.

00z GFS & GFSv16

Given the regular GFS's thermal issues, I would have expected the GFSv16 to be snowier for Cedar Rapids, but the models are flipped.  The v16 is seeing thermal issues around CR.  I can't see Iowa City getting 6" while CR gets 2".

Update:  I just checked the zoomed-in v16 and it appears to be a bit glitchy.  At 12z, it has heavy snow south and east of Cedar Rapids, but freezing rain north of that through Cedar Rapids.  It makes no sense.

2.97" at Lincoln today, which breaks the old record of 0.86". 3.76" 2 day total. I'd consider this a win.

Also looks like highest daily March total. Wow

Rain changed to snow at KDSM at about 1:30am. Looked to be inline for about 3" but the echoes just flew N and than changed back to rain. Never could stay under the heavier bands for more than 15 minutes. Ended up with 1.3". Seasonal total at 55.8".

*** A very odd thing occurred just before the rain changed to heavy wet snow-- the wind had been 090 (Easterly) at 15 G to 25kts- and than went SOUTH 18005KT - and rather light and BOOM - switched over to snow. Usually it's a NE or WNW wind that changes the rain to snow, but not this time. But 15-30mins later, back to 090 and eventually back to rain several hours later--- but odd nonetheless. ***

Precip already beginning to move out over here. If it switches over to snow it won’t last long. I don’t think the 11” last nights HRRR showed is gonna pan out

Yeah the models that showed nothing for me are the ones that seem to be correct. Still bare ground here though it appears like a bit of sleet just outside my window. I thought I heard sleet on the windows last evening already, but maybe it was rain hitting so hard because of strong winds.

We can start lowering snow totals around here.  The HRRR was much too aggressive with the cold.  It had mix by 5am and all snow by 6am.  It's after 7am now and it's still a mix of rain and sleet.  Other models had it snow by 7am as well.  Maybe last night's UK, which had Cedar Rapids and Iowa City down to only 1", was right.  I see DVN upgraded Cedar Rapids to a winter storm warning, too, so that's not looking good.

If I was living in Boulder, CO I'd consider this storm a bust after days of model runs showing 2-3' or more and at the end of the day, the local area picked up 10-20".  The south side picked up much more than the north side.  Some places east of the foothills picked up close to 2 feet.  After a slow start, Denver really scored tremendously later on Saturday as the temps cooled off and the snow became more fluffier as DIA picked up a grand total of 27.1" of snow setting the #2 spot for largest March snowstorm.

The snow was pounding pretty good here just before it ended earlier this a.m. So have a decent wet coating making it look like winter. Measured up to 1” of snow with 0.8” for an average in most spots. Storm total liquid in my 4” diameter gauges is 1.16” and 1.11”. My other gauges had a bit less, but I go by my 4” gauges.

I’m wondering how the radar composites can appear so accurate when DVN’s radar is offline? Or maybe that’s why radar often showed lighter returns just east of me.
