Lovely Sunday morning. One dog is enjoying the sun in the house, another is enjoying a Squirrel yelling at him, and a snowbank update!
Currently 39 degrees after a low of 37.

It's squirrel haven in Kentucky, they bark all day long.

The neighborhood cats here love the taunting. 😝

Just think if rainier goes. Tambora 2.0. Top 4K feet blown off. 14k to 10k. VE-2

No doubt Rainier at least has Mount Mazama type potential.  It is actually more massive than Mazama was before it blew.  Can't imagine what a catastrophe that would be.

We don’t really need it up here at this point. Everything is soaked after 5 months in a row wetter than normal.

Temp range has been 40-41 degrees for like 18 hours now.

It managed to drop to 36 here last night and is currently only up to 38.  It appears we have a more impressive inversion situation coming up when we get a minor shot of chilly air and then a very strong ridge right over us at the end of the week.

Unfortunately that AR wiped out our negative departure here. +0.2 now this month at the halfway point.

Also no one in Tonga lost their life from this volcano according to news from the islands (yet?).  None that they know of yet.  So no Tongan's were lost.  According to the paper, residents they talked to said that no one even noticed any significant tidal differences anywhere on the island chain.  News outlets from outside of Tonga are reporting "possible" devastation to the island, but from within Tonga, their news outlets say the exact opposite.  So I guess we will find out with some time.  The biggest reported wave was just over 3 feet from blast on the shores of the capital city in Tonga... so it wasn't much.

None the less, thoughts and prayers to all.

I've been following their newspaper here.

Also incredible photos from them.

Something not talked about in the media, and something that can give us hope is that Tonga seem's to have been well aware the volcano was close to blowing.  This Tweet from a few day before the explosion shows they were already warning citizens to prepare just incase. (Last photo)

From what I understand that particular island was mostly submerged anyway.  Probably uninhabited so that really helped minimize the damage.

Yeah....about the only thing you can say is its a little better than the last 4 and we finally had a white New Years.  Still looking to break the January curse though.

There was barely even an island there... it was definitely uninhabited.    Maybe a resting spot for the birds.

Preliminary 1.5mb drop from the spike. About .3mb lower than the first spike-to-dip. Seems to suggest there's still plenty of energy left to circulate the globe again. Thoughts?

IMO that had to at least be a VEI 5.  We will probably see another spike based on that data.

Is the VEI index based on pressure changes?     I thought it was based on SO2 emissions, but I guess pressure waves are more of indication of the power of the eruption.

It doesn’t look incredibly torchy coming up and if there’s some inversion stuff in play we may not end up with quite as large of a positive anomaly this month as the last few Januaries.

Amazingly there is actually a recording of the sound the Krakatoa made.  Not sure how far away it was, but in spite of the crude equipment they had to work with you get the idea.  I imagine they captured the sound purely by accident, but maybe they knew it was coming.

In my understanding there wasn't enough SO2 injection to actually qualify as VEI-5, even though the eruption itself spawned a big ash cloud and shockwave. Could be wrong though, all data is still early.
