Latest on Kay…not just the rain but much of the wind could be intact in parts of the region. 100mph gusts in downslope areas (!!)

They think it will rain pretty much everywhere up to about SLO County. The question is how much.

Temp went from 83F an hour ago to 88F right now and still apparently rising, at 1:40 AM. Sudden gusty winds outside appear to be the cause.

Not getting any wind here so far, which is fairly typical for many Santa Ana events. We only get them when they're from the north or northeast.

For the first time since 1997, a tropical cyclone is affecting CA while still (barely) at T/S strength. A quarter of a century!

Who knows if this will be more common in the climate change era though…?

Only one direct landfall has ever happened in recorded history: the 1939 storm that made landfall in Long Beach/San Pedro as a high end tropical storm.

Suffocating heat but not a drop for me yet.

LAX just went into Reverse Ops: planes are taking off to the east and landing from the ocean. Happens only 10x a year on average, during strong offshore events.

Getting breezy. Feels like a hair dryer except it’s wet. The insects are getting restless—found this big dragonfly and an alate termite.

It was very windy for a while, enough to make a big mess outside, Santa Ana style. Now it's starting to rain, however.

Been raining here lightly since 11 AM. 0.13" so far at my station.

Temperature pattern is topsy-turvy today - high was 88F at 2 AM, while the low is the current temperature this afternoon at 76F. We had Santa Ana Winds early in the morning, which was messing the temperature up.

Mainly just drizzle for the past couple of hours. Nothing heavy yet, and doppler radar isn't showing anything promising at the moment. 0.14"

Steady sprinkle now. Nothing substantial yet. The radar looks pretty good but little of it is hitting the ground.
