January 2017 Observations and Model Discussion for the Pacific Northwest

Sure has been wet in CA... even SoCal.

My parents are in the middle of a flexible three week trip to LA, Oakland, Yosemite, and Monterrey.

They keep asking me what order to do things in to miss the rain and I'm not sure what to tell them because the rain just keeps on coming.

Yosemite is going to get about 5 feet of snow this week and the Coast has been getting heavy rain and wind. Guess they've gotten to see some big waves at least?

Years of context Mattias.   ;)

I've seen plenty of context over the years.  :P

I just don't see it on this one though. If anything, cool rainy Summers would make the hikes Jesse was talking about less accessible.

Seemed like a case of preconceived notions overwhelmed the actual points being made.

My brother-in-law has been asking me for detailed forecasts because they cannot get baseball try-outs in for the kids down there.    I said just do it in the rain... they play the entire season in the rain up here.

I love Monterrey. Steinbeck is my favorite author so it is only natural I suppose.

He's a card carrying commie you know. ;)

He's dead. And later in life he became pretty conservative and supported the Vietnam War.

Next week looks like nice weather across the state.  If they are driving, I would plan any mountain travel around the storms.  The Grapevine is sometimes closed with these types of storms as it can snow at altitude and/or accidents.  I've been reading reports on the Fresno Bee that several roads into Yosemite have been closed so be sure to check the local reports, Sacramento lowlands also has some local flooding.

Still looking like high potential for early February. Nice to know we'll have a nice fake cold snap before that also. The CPC is certainly advertising a cold west on their 6 to 10 day outlook. Thankfully this ridge will be happening in January.

Don't get me wrong. I love Steinbeck. I can actually picture our own modern day Grapes of Wrath scenario playing out over the next several years!

That is silly. That was 2008-2011.

February ridges suck.

I just hope March doesn't have too much cold rain.

Yeah...I don't care for ridges in February either unless you're talking about something like 1929 or 1989.

Hopefully this will be a spring that features a lot of chilly / clear weather. I love those.

Any recent examples of springs with chilly AND clear weather?

Can't really think of any. Years like 1949, 1951, and 1975 are some examples.

Imagine if it were 45 years ago right now.

Also, plenty of time left for a significant snow event. About 45 days really if we're stretching it... About 35 days more reasonably. My hopes are less hopeful though after my PDO data search in correlation with snowy winters in the Puget Sound region.

A president that would soon be impeached was about to be inaugurated...

The talk about Trump being impeached is laughable. The same people who said he had NO chance of being elected are saying it. Hmmmm....

*Intersting* position of the ridge @ hour 240 on new Euro.

The ridge is still in two pieces. We'll have to see how it comes together. The models are going to have fits over this.
