VancouverIslandSouth
We used up our last trick for getting snow here and ended up with nothing on the ground going into the cold snap. It snowed 4 times...out of those it stuck 3 times, but melted off pretty fast. Pretty bad luck for this setup. I actually think the cold air having to advect into BC before it could get here is what hurt us. If the cold had already been in place it would have really helped our cause. I think the 500mb pattern was good for a lot more than what we saw. The upper level pattern had a good snow-making look to it this time around (this wasn't a backdoor event), although the 850mb temperatures in the BC interior were suspiciously high for the amount of cold air shown to make it to the coast. The best event in Victoria last year came last February when the Arctic air built up in the Fraser Valley for an extend duration ahead of the event. The outflow coming off the BC North Coast is something I like to look at for snow potential down here and it was marginal this time around. On Feb 23, 2011 Prince Rupert had a high-low of 27F/16F, yesterday Prince Rupert had a high/low of 36F/28F.
