February Weather in the Pacific Northwest

If it makes people feel any better, looks like there may be a March 1st snowstorm (shown on the GFS).

Looks like a classic.  God knows we deserve it.

If we were looking at zonal flow starting tomorrow then i would be sad but we look to have many chances to score over the next week or even longer. It aint over yet man.

I know.  At work today I was so angry I didn't say a word to anybody for at least half the day.  I think I bottomed out with that.  It's hard to not be impressed with this cold episode regardless of the snow, but I feel so left out.  No doubt the models continuing to lengthen and deepen to cold period is only good for us.

Worth mentioning - this is the latest 3" snowfall (officially) in Portland since Feb. 28, 1962. We just beat Feb. 19, 1993 by one day for the honors.

Also, a first - this is the latest in the season that PDX has had a high of 34 or lower, with 3"+ of snow. Again, just beat out 2-19-1993.

These patterns seem to be a dime a dozen down in Oregon. They've been modeled numerous times here the past 2 winters, but they just never seem to happen. Once it gets close it always falls apart in some manner, too far north, too far south, too warm, too dry...

NWS definitely seeing something. They're insisting on the precip band moving southward & switching over for you guys. This was tweeted less than 10 mins ago:

Yeah they're not right about the central valley seeing snow.  The NAM showed pretty much nothing from Salem to Dallas to Corvallis to Albany

You know more than anyone on here that this crap happens here and things can change for the good in a hurry. Last night i had no idea it would snow all morning and afternoon today. Just remember it is what it is my friend. Your area has done very good in the past many times.

We come from the land of the ice and snow.

Hmm, strange. No melting here. The roads are covered and it is down to freezing.

My mind is pretty blown yeah, I can't explain how that can happen. The snow I got from the very heavy snow earlier melted faster than the morning snow I got except I have NE winds now and it is night and the air temp is still 32.6F.

Traffic cameras in Beaverton to the east look snowier for sure.

Yeah, PDX was a low outlier in March 1989. Downtown had 3.5" and Gresham had 6".

It shows a nice band of snow move through the area just after midnight tomorrow.

See...the people in Oregon couldn't give a about us up here.  Not saying it wouldn't be the same if the situation were reversed.  Simply the ugly side of human nature.

Seriously?

Dude, it's weather. Roll the dice and hope for the best. You're your own worst enemy when it comes to this roller coaster crap and no one should have to feel guilty for enjoying a little snow.

Well I'm sure you know what you signed up for moving to this s**thole.   I know that in a few years I'm getting out of here, because I know how you feel man.  Always being deprived is a pretty horrible feeling, and living where I do, even when snow is predicted it often comes down as rain or nothing falls.  Get over it, it's just where we live.  I hate to say it but that's part of living in the PNW.

We'll get our time though.  Mark my words.

I have my doubts about the system tomorrow evening up here.  These d**n things that slide down the coast get killed by the dry air flowing through the Cascade passes when they reach the Puget Sound lowlands.  I honestly have to say it's almost unbelievable that Seattle normally averages as much or more snowfall than Portland given all of the hoops you have jump through to get snow here.  Somehow, though, Seattle has still scored many great snowstorms in spite of that.  As I've mentioned before one of things that really seems to kill us is when the western trough digs too deep.  Seattle does much better when the trough only effects the northern part of the West.  For whatever reason we have been unable to achieve that configuration since Jan 2012.

Good week to be soaking up the sun in Hawaii, Jim.

If it makes you feel any better... my security cameras show just scraps of snow in the shaded areas at my house.

Although that would not bother me even if we were at home. I would find this week infinitely more pleasant and enjoyable than most of the last 6 weeks.
