February Weather in the Pacific Northwest

Really cold today.  The temp has already started to slowly drop after peaking at 34.  Going to be some big minus departures today.  Nice heavy cloud cover now.

Picked up another 1.4" last night bringing my season total up to 8" scattered over 6 minor events. Despite it being 23F right now, there is some melting going on now that the sun is coming out.

The easterly gradients shown o the NAM with this system are anemic so I can't imagine the ESPL having an east wind problem.  We're just going to have to wait and see.

I'm thinking the timing on the NAM looks too fast.  The ECMWF was a few hours slower.

The 12km NAM looks great for the Portland area. The 3km NAM shows almost nothing.

I've seen cases where the very high res models actually over think things too much.  I think it's a toss up between the 4km and 12km in the WRF for instance.  I've seen both perform better than the other.

Pretty exciting.  the improvement between the 0z and 12z runs on the Euro was highly encouraging also.  I think the fact the winds have become southerly through the Puget Sound basin is actually very good in this case.   Sets up convergence potential and limits the chances of dry east wind killing the moisture.

Hopefully will get a small warning shot tonight. Crossing fingers.

Olympics eating away at some of the east side of the moisture but that should become less of a problem as the low moves south.

That is not what is happening.

Yeah and in the early 2000’s I sent copies to Brennan and Tim!

I still have them!! Actually Bryant has them right now. I let him borrow them. It’s getting harder to watch them though with the only VCR we have being built in to a super old 13” tv sitting in my garage... with N64 hooked up to it and the only game i have is 2000 NFL blitz.

Btw i recorded weather forecasts as well... quite a bit in 2008 actually

NWS:

Cool north-northwest flow aloft will continue for the next week.

In the short term, satellite imagery shows the next shortwave in
this flow pattern diving S-SE down the B.C. coast. The shortwave
trough axis will move southeast across Western Washington late
this evening, around 06z or 10 pm. In advance of the trough axis,
850 mb progs show some westerly flow off the Pacific and a warm
advection pattern, which leads to lift
. Meanwhile, the surface
reflection will be a weak 1020 mb low which will move S-SE between
the coast and 130W, so surface flow will never turn strongly
onshore. This will help the low-level air mass stay cold enough
for precip type to remain snow, except perhaps at the immediate
coast this evening

This is impressive...Especially considering the upper level airmass over W. Oregon isn't all that cold right now. But it will begin cooling pretty quickly around 1-3pm.

Burned last night when they upped the snow totals

True on the other hand it was about 40 this time yesterday at EUG and its 34 today. Combine that with them being in the sweet spot on a lot of the model runs.

Nice big flakes coming down in Victoria right now

Clearly coming down good even right on the water on this cam.

It'll be interesting to see if the grass starts turning white soon there.
