May Weather in the Pacific Northwest

Recommended Posts

Not to say PDX hasn't seen an increase in UHI recently because they have, but their afternoon temps this month don't seem unusual compared to Troutdale.

Maybe. It could be that there have been a handful of repeating patterns the last few weeks that have specifically favored warmth over the east metro area while areas to the immediate north, west and south have all been cooler.

This was definitely true on 5/3 and 4/26.

Getting some convective looking clouds forming now... very summery day.

I don’t see anything convective about those clouds.

Well... it is getting convective out there.    Whether you want to troll me or not.   NWS just added thunderstorms to the evening forecast as well.

Something worth keeping an eye on at least as we go through the summer.

Meanwhile I'm starting to get some sprinkles here.

Not saying it isn’t. But those are fair-weather cumulus clouds, not cumulus congestus.

No... definitely cumulus congestus forming now.

I can watch it happening in real time overhead as the front begins to approach and destabilize the atmosphere.

No, those are cumulus humilis, or maybe cumulus mediocris at best.

Cumulus congestus has a much more prolific vertical component.

Its convective in nature and definitely not fair weather cumulus... the negatively tilted front approaching is triggering the development.

Probably cumulus mediocris. No way in hell are those cumulus congestus.

Okay, brother. Just FWIW, fair weather cumulus are also technically “convective”.

There’s convection, then there’s convection.

OMG.

There is a negatively tilted front moving in and the atmosphere is becoming unstable and its warm... and there will likely be thunderstorms before too long.    Its a summery day.

Good Lord.

There fair weather cumulus clouds are looking meaner by the minute!

Did my sunny/90*F prediction verify before the evil clouds of death arrived?

BTW, those probably still aren’t cumulus congestus.

They sure as hell are not fair weather cumulus as you described them.

They were before. Not as much now, but they still don’t seem to have much in the way of vertical development.

They were not before either. There is nothing fair weather about the turbulence approaching this afternoon.

ECMWF shows 65 and partly sunny at PDX tomorrow. It only showed 76 for today though.

Yeah, given the performance of PDX lately, expecting them exceed forecast highs by 3-5 degrees seems pretty reasonable.
