July 2019 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

Yeah, again, I’m personally hoping that the Portland area gets a massive blizzard while the entirety of Puget Sound as well as Eugene gets 33°F rain.

As jealous as I am of both cities getting better events than anything Portland has seen in a while, I honestly want another December 2008, except maybe Eugene can get in on this one too. Snow for everyone! It would make the whole forum happy. Maybe Phil can get a nor'easter at the same time for something.

Jan, 1969 brought a snow bomb to everyone.  I said it last year, It'll flip one day. It has happened before and will happen again. I've a feeling we can get persistent bombing lows that move down the coast and stall off Cape Blanco, bringing goodies to everyone like 2008. EUG had a couple fun days with it.  Missed out on the main event but was still better than little to nothing.  EUG has had a great decade so closing it out with a regional blizzard on Dec 24 might be about as good as it gets.

Ha, you wish! Better prepare for another January 2017!

(but seriously, I'm rooting for everyone. Maybe Portland a little bit more cause of obvious bias.)

Hoping that California doesn’t steal all of our precipitation again. CFS monthly is painting green over the PNW all winter which is definitely encouraging.

80 and sunny here in Tacoma. Really beautiful day here, 5th 80+ day of the summer and the 7th of the year. I definitely don’t mind low 80s.

I’m not sure how many complete 100% sunny days we’ve had exactly this summer but it feels kind of rare here this year. maybe 5 or so, either way it’s been nice to see clear skies and mountains in every direction.

I hope it snows lots here this winter but rains everywhere else. My snow is more enjoyable when it is raining elsewhere.

The I suppose I amend my original statement. I hope it snows everywhere, but warm-noses your house. There, we good now?

I was kidding, dude. Definitely hoping for a December 2008 type thing but also hitting Eugene as well. Been a while since the last Arctic Blast.

Crazy stuff. It's been a rather tepid summer for heatwaves in the U.S. in comparison (aside from AK).

Yeah, this July is going to be the hottest on record globally going ahead of July 2017. In 2017, SEA had a +1.6 departure and PDX a +0.8. Pretty similar numbers so far this July with SEA having a +1.3 departure through the first 24 days and PDX a +0.7. So slightly above average here while most of the planet bakes.

Really can’t dislike cold rain in winter when it brings snow in the mountains, among other benefits I have talked about.

Also, just IMO, freezing rain is far worse than 33°F rain.

Who cares about the mountains if it doesn’t help your backyard? I don’t see the fun in that. If anything it’s more depressing to know you’re so close yet so far to accumulating snow.

Skiing on fresh powder is far more enjoyable than skiing on 7 day old hardpack.

To each their own.

A healthy mountain snowpack does a lot of good in our region. One of the reasons I like cold rain. Also it’s just more refreshing and comfortable than the humid, muggy stuff.

GISTEMP is trash. At some point the physical reality on the ground will become incompatible with the ridiculously flawed methodologies employed by these surface-based networks.

It was warm today. I have a pretty bad sunburn, but I'm doubling down and heading to Detroit lake this weekend. Should be gorgeous. SOOO happy there aren't any fires this year.

100% agree. Hope that holds throughout the rest of the summer, or at least until I go to Mt Shasta.

Unfortunately, there's a growing 150 acre wildfire in Southern Oregon. Looks like their saying it was started by an illegal campfire. If only they would have listened to Smokey Bear.
