July 2019 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

Just got back from San Francisco late last night. I love the microclimates that are very predictable in a normal, stable summer pattern. Marine influence with low clouds to the West, Sunny and warm in the city proper, breezy and cooler on the bayfront and the much warmer temps to the East and South with less influence from the cool waters.

Even got some bonus baseball yesterday (and a sunburn) as the Mets and Giants went 12 innings.  Sure wouldn't want to live down there, but a great place to spend a long weekend.

Perfect, shmerfect.  Friends of mine in Eugene are already becoming alarmed about fire danger.  One of them mistook a 9% reading on a graph of EUG weather conditions for humidity (it was actually sky cover), and was ready to start hosing down the roof.

A nice, region-wide soaking rain event (preferably on a Monday night so as not to disrupt anyone's outdoor plans) would do a lot to allay everyone's fears, and would count a lot toward "perfection" in my book.

Compared to the past 5-6 years it has been incredible. I was camping out in the Rogue Nat'l forest over the weekend and fire danger was only moderate there. Once you get down to Eugene and points south though it is pretty dry, and the conifer die offs between Eugene and Roseburg are staggering, in some places probably 50-75% of the conifers below 1000' elevation have died. Once you got into Jackson county it wasn't as bad.

Spending my lunch break mowing very long grass. Have not watered once this summer and its growing like its early May. I can't remember it being like this in late July. Maybe 2008 and 2011. Its wet out there.

Redding can be pretty wet some years if the pattern lines up right.

In 1983 they got 78.05” of precipitation which blows any year at PDX out of the water.

Last November-March they got 36.8” total which is about as much as Portland gets in an average calendar year. In fact, they got 9.33” in March alone while most of the PNW was high and dry. If I’m correct, some parts of WA saw their driest March on record.

They seem to be virtually guaranteed to get at least one month every rainy season with 7” of precip or more. In Portland or Seattle, such is not the case.

Of course, in 2013, they got only 12.8” for the entire year.

Grass is pretty yellow/brown down here still but we’ve gotten 0.99” on the month. Definitely wouldn’t have guessed July would exceed the combined rain totals of May and June here a few months ago.

First time in history that OLM has recorded more rain in July than May/June combined.

OLM is in the area that has been most anomalously wet this month...

kind of a turnaround from recent months because of the lack of SW flow but we finally were able to cash in here.

If only we could get these kinds of precip anomalies in wet season...

Its happened during numerous months up here in the wet season in the last 5 years.

And it happened as recently as April of this year.

And it usually sucks when it does happen.

Haha, preferences.

I would absolutely love to have North Bend’s precipitation.

Normal here precipitation is enough... getting 200% of our normal precipitation is not fun.   But it happens.

You act like because its a wetter climate here then it must always be extremely anomalously wet all the time.

Your wet season is almost guaranteed to have at least some epic wet months per year. None of that here. Last month over 7” was March 2017.

But all that "epic" rain could just be normal here.    And normal is not too bad here... we usually have nice breaks and sunny days with an east wind in between.   Getting 200% of our normal rain does not excite or interest me in any way.

Really hope mother nature keeps us cool to cold like this through next March. This persistent pattern has been great since Feb.

This pattern is not even close to Feb/March. Ridge is further offshore. Would result in lots of BSF...

Cold Season 2023/24:

Total snowfall: 26"

Highest daily snowfall: 5"

Deepest snow depth: 12"

Coldest daily high: -20ºF

Coldest daily low: -42ºF

Number of subzero days: 5

Tomorrow will be a good test for the GFS ensemble mean temperature output.

The ECMWF shows low clouds filling in the Seattle area by morning and then a mix of low clouds and mid level clouds and a high around 74.   The GFS ensemble mean shows a high of 82 in Seattle... which implies no low clouds and thin mid level clouds.   It does not have a cloud map.

I suspect the GFS ensemble mean does not have the resolution to see the effect of the marine layer and it will be wrong... which will be the first day it did not perfectly predict Seattle area temps since last week.
