Rain will be widespread in coverage during the
daytime and evening hours in the presence of a deformation axis
forced by the cyclonic scheme. However, a changeover to a rain/snow
mix followed by snow showers will accumulate a slushy quarter of an
inch south of M-59 and up to 1 inch through the Thumb. Actual
accumulation reports may vary widely depending on how quick the
colder air fills in and for how long surface temps stay below
freezing.

We peaked at 35º this afternoon and it's already down to 31º, so the snow should have no trouble sticking to non-paved surfaces.  A couple days ago it was 40º when the snow began.

the RAP and HRRR have trended wetter for eastern Iowa. The RAP is up to 3", while the HRRR is ~2.5" as of the 19z run.

Yep.  This run has us up to about 0.23".  It doesn't show accumulation beginning until 8pm, but we are already getting a nice rate and the grass is whitening.

 

Snowfall is so much nicer in daylight.

Based on radar I'm starting to get a little more optimistic for higher totals. This band is increasing in coverage and intensity, and assuming it lasts into tomorrow morning, 3" is definitely attainable.

Snow is picking up here. Got a dusting on the ground and a little better than that on the deck. Pretty scene. Feels more like December than October.

We've been in a bit of a lull for the last hour... just very light snow.  Better snow is expected to fill in by 8-9pm.

Welcome back to da Mitt fun! 18z NAM has both sped this up a bit, and brought back the sub-990mb Low to Huron. Not much presidence for such an early storm tbh so I cant tell you what I'd expect. Extra travel time seems logical imho.

If Cedar Rapids can somehow get 4 inches tonight, that would tie the record for the snowiest October on record here. 

 

The record monthly snowfall for October here is 7.0 inches set back in 1997. All that snow fell in one storm that occurred on October 26, 1997. We had 3.0 inches Monday night so let's see how much we can add to our October snowfall total tonight.

I just measured 1.4" on the deck and car, 1.2" on the snowboard (not sure why there's less there)

0z NAM drops SLP 19 mb in 21 hrs tomorrow. That's pretty robust for this neck of the woods and should make for some chilly winds on the face.

Yea I dont understand the justification for the upgrade. Despite higher returns, rates are uncharacteristically low, probably only 1/4" per hour at best. I haven't measured, but I'd guess I have around 1" at a glance.

We are now down to 29º and the pavement is being covered.

 

The rate is not what it was a couple nights ago, but it's a solid light to moderate snow that will add up all night.

I just measured 2.0” at 10:00pm. The snow is coming down pretty good right now. I think 4 inches looks like a good bet here based on the radar.

What a great start to snow season. Hopefully it’s a sign of things to come this winter. Good to see flakes flying!
