Smoke is really a cold lovers dream... you still get the cold nights and then daytime temps go nowhere.   I remember some days in the 60s with thick smoke that should have been in the 80s or 90s based on the upper level pattern.   No wonder Andrew loves wildfire smoke so much.

Was the one silver lining of September 2020. Prevented that from being the warmest September all time. Just had to wait two more years.

Our experience out here has been no effect on nighttime temps and significant cooling of daytime temps when smoke is thick enough to dim sunlight.

Interesting info. Usually don’t see radiative cooling overperform by the magnitude it did last night, in any month, let alone in June.

Maybe since the boundary layer is typically deeper here vs PNW, the earlier decoupling yesterday afternoon augmented the nocturnal inversion during critical early hours, allowing it to better establish? Can’t think of any other reason.

Something is seriously wrong this year. This *never* happens here. Like, never ever ever.

About as frequent as Seattle or Portland seeing accumulating snowfall in May.

I’d be happy if it were elevated above the boundary layer. That’s what usually happens. But not this year.

Makes sense, I'm not sure I view God in that sense either. I believe there are things beyond my comprehension, and that one way or another our universe was formed and try as we may, the human mind cannot really wrap it's mind around that. Whatever force it was which created us and dictated the laws of nature, whether chance or intelligent design, it is a power and process far more complex than we can imagine in our finite minds. I like to say we all believe in God(s), we just call them by different names.

Feds basically confirmed Alien intelligence existed recently and the Whistleblower is currently trying to bring that truth to the public.  If true it's probably the biggest seismic resonation in the history of civilization and pretty much blows the concept of organized religion (control of the masses via 'faith') out of the water.

I have heard many great things about the winter of 2002-03!    We bought our property here in the summer of 2003 so I just missed that winter.

surface/lower atmospheric smoke acts like fog in a sense it came dim the sun and cool daytime temps, but it does not trap heat at night, so cooling happens regardless, unlike clouds above the surface

Assuming PDX hits 90 today and tomorrow (likely), they will already have six days under their belt by the first week of June.

Interesting to see PDX continually being the hot spot. Historically I always thought SLE and EUG had more 90 degree days, but perhaps this year is the sign of a coming trend on that. Also, and as well, I did hear somewhere, can't remember where, this June is different than last.

First red flag warning of the year for the Cascades in WA.

It’s been quite windy here last few days, especially near the lakes. I work at the Boeing plant in Renton and the breeze off of the lake feels real good. Look like more of the same today. 😄

I guess, but it still doesn't answer the big questions.

Personally I find it humbling to know that we are as insignificant as ants in the big picture. I think about it sometimes when I open my beehives in the summer and see a thriving colony of 40,000 bees, of which 39,999 will be dead in six weeks. But yet they are driven by evolution to survive and thrive and they work in a near-perfectly orchestrated way to ensure the survival of the colony and the species. It's incredible and beautiful and makes living worth it to see things like that. I feel the same about the weather, and the fact that through math science we have managed to explain and understand the weather well enough to predict the future is amazing.

All of human society and everything that we hold near and dear will be gone before we know it, our planet and all of its history will be incinerated by the sun, and there will be no record or memory of earth's existence by anyone. And all of that will happen in a blip relative to the timeline of the universe. And who knows, the universe itself may be cyclical but we can't observe or prove that so as far as I'm concerned it's irrelevant. We could be an alien ant farm and it wouldn't matter to any of us, the best we can do is respect our tiny little delicate planet and those around us.

I feel more fulfilled by accepting and respecting the above...time is a construct of the mind so there isn't any need to worry about it, although I admit it can be terrifying to be insignificant, it's better in the long run.

(I'm obviously a full blown atheist but I was raised Catholic so I know religion well!)

Looool. Models have been falsely advertising rainfall for weeks now. Always busts. The GFS has been especially awful. Projected 1” last Saturday. Ended up with a cloudless sky and haze.

Oh and now it’s showing fantasy Gulf/Caribbean hurricanes again. Every year at this time it does the same thing.

I hate that model with a passion. It could go up in flames tomorrow and the world would be better off for it.

Yep, the upper-air pattern looks like block city and good luck getting widespread precipitation with that smoke around and soil moisture continuing to decline. The agony of drought.

my curiosity is piqued, feels like the first time serious people are saying serious things.  MSM will obviously suppress until they have multiple sources to back the claim, curious to see if/when it leads anywhere.

Woah woah woah, that's like 5 steps too far! As a PNWer who hates the smoke, I'll admit to feeling a little schadenfreude about the east coast smoke -- and as I mentioned yesterday, I'm cheering for it to blanket the big east coast cities as much as possible, especially Washington DC.

Oh I should add, I'm not an academic! I work in the private sector.
