2021-22, 2016-17, 2010-11, 2008-09, 1995-96, 1988-89, 1971-72, 1970-71, 1964-65, 1955-56, 1949-50...a lot of really nice winters and historic events happened with Ninas.

But there definitely is a tendency for neutral/+ENSO to be better further south in the PNW, and -ENSO to be better further north.

You forgot 2022-23. Great winter for many and PDX had a 10” snow event.

True. 21-22 and 22-23 both had great moments, but in different places at different times.

We can split hairs all day, but 2022-23 was way better regionally.

I think December 2021 was the only below average month here that winter. I know it was a little chillier further north, but 22-23 was cold pretty much every month but January which was average. In the November-March period.

Well, I believe most the Puget Sound region and s Willamette Valley did better with snow in Dec 2021 than anything in 2022-23.

Counts for something, despite 2022-23 being a colder season.

If we are boiling winters down to 2 day periods then we might as well throw 2020-21 in for good measure!

What has been the best all around neutral winter in W. Washington since the late 70’s?

Hopefully we can score an epic wind storm this coming fall/winter!

Maybe 90/91? “All around” is a subjective term.

For all intents and purposes, 16/17 was also a neutral winter, as it completely lost any semblance of LF niña forcing in Jan (and was closer to niño-costero by Feb).

The GFS is way too far offshore with next weekend’s ULL. I don’t even need to look at other guidance to know it’s wrong.

Was wondering when we’d start seeing that springtime bias manifest. Hasn’t been as bad this year (so far).

The Macdonald-led Seahawks can't come any sooner, excited for the new era.

A shame the Kraken couldn't continue their momentum from last year though 🦑

1952-53, 1960-61, and 1993-94 also come to mind.

I think 1943-44 and 1944-45 were neutral as well (following a moderate Nina in 1942-43). Both were regionally awful.

2013-14 was our last classically neutral ENSO winter. As was 2012-13. The latter being another pretty lame winter.

I would like a repeat of 2006/07. Too bad that was a weak Nino.

2016/17 should be considered neutral as well. Tropics were devoid of any niña characteristics by January.

So was 2018/19. And 1968/69.

Weak niños can do weird stuff.

Then there's 1980-81. Which was a giant, gaping asscrack of a winter.

That was one of the lamest winters in history out here as well. Grand total locally was < 2”.

Also the worst dry/windy combo in the post-WWII era. Overall it’s probably tied with 2022/23 for #1 atop the nightmare fuel list.

Of course SSTAs alone don't predict our local weather has we have seen in recent years.   But I am liking the odds of a white Christmas this year.

if dryness becomes the trend for Spring, that's far from hyperbole this time.  we already have pending restrictions now over here based on river flow.  snowpack less than 70%.  not too far fetched.  cheers
