Interesting 0z GFS run for sure.  Really gorgeous evolution in that 7 to 9 day period.

Of course it chooses to get clear tonight when the cold air is gone.  Even at that it's already down to 43.  Way better stuff than before the cold snap.

I hope we're not getting too excited yet.

I mean, this is the time of year to get our hopes irrationally high and I'm one of the biggest weenies out there but, careful guys. This winter probably won't see another January 1950 or November 1985.

But, it could... 🤔

In my book whatever November does is fine.  I just hope there isn't too much warm gloomy stuff strictly from a preference perspective.  I wouldn't mind seeing the 0z GFS verify, but if it doesn't good stuff will come later.

It has that same low way off the coast that makes the GFS work out so well.

I kind of like that seasons like 1970-71 are being talked about as analogs along with ones like 1988 and 1942.  A hybrid of those two types of La Nina winters would yield some fantastic results.

1970-71 was unique in that it had action in November, December, January, February, and March.

The quick hitting snow/ice event on November 22-23, a fairly cold and snowy period from December 15 to January 15, and then the regional event at the end of February and beginning of March. Also a significant windstorm in late March.

Nope, just a lot of cold rain. Snow was not far away at all for this time of year though. I drove up to Cypress and the lowest elevation I saw snow on the ground was ~1380 feet, just before that view point area.

Too bad. Actually got a bit of it in Whatcom County in the wee hours yesterday morning. Ice pellets for me, a skiff of snow in the hills to the south.

It's called clown range for a reason.

I must say I'm pretty shocked the GEM comes up with a big GOA block also.  Hmmmm.

The GFS and GEM both have incredible surface high pressure complexes over the NE Pacific and Western Canada by the end of next week.  Arctic outbreak signatures for sure.  The GFS is a little faster, but both evolve in a similar fashion.

Had to look up November 1985 with all the talk of it here lately. Found this piece and I have to say, sounds pretty nice!

"There was a dark line against the night sky as a heavy cloud formation drifted slowly down from the north. Behind the cloud snow began to fall. Overnight a powerful wind ripped down Puget Sound. Wednesday morning the city had an additional seven inches of snow."

Interestingly both the Feb 1985 and Nov 1985 events overperformed in our area as opposed to the areas that normally get hit harder.  We are really due for this area to have an overperforming winter.  Every so often this area is the big winner.  For whatever reason the 1920s were epic here compared to the Seattle area.

Statistically, November 1985 was even more significant than January 1950.

There was some article on that somewhere but I don't know where it is anymore.

Anyway, November 1985 is and was, the gold standard. It may not have been as snowy as January 1950 was but solely on temperature anomaly, it was incredible.

I actually feel kind of sorry for people on here who didn't get to experience November 1985.  Hands down the most anomalous cold / snow period I've ever seen here....especially when considering it was November.

Hey guys, i am probably one of the older followers / lurkers here on the forum, old enough to remember very well the great winters of the late 60's early 70's. in regards to the 1985 November pre thanksgiving storm... that storm kicked a** over  February 2019 here in the south sound, not even close. Snowed hard all day into the night. Ended up with well over a foot ( 14-15 " imby ). Cleared up and stayed very cold for several days. We have not seen anything even close to that storm here in the Tacoma area since then. Would love to see another 1985 storm !!

The month was a beast.  January 1950 was colder anomaly wise for Seattle, but that was because it was the entire month whereas November 1985 was half the month.

Indeed.  Where I was living it dropped to 10 degrees with 10 inches of snow on the ground.  Continuously below freezing for 10 or 11 straight days.
