February 2014 in the PNW

Ironically... today is first day of the year with a very spring-like sky here of blue sky and puffy cumulus clouds.    For most part its either been sunny or totally cloudy here this year.    Feels pleasant in the sun.   Any snow I got would have melted anyways since its 39 degrees.

Dude, Work outside all day and tell me it feels like spring. And you know with the low dew points the snow would of stayed. Oh Tim...

With the lowering Dew Point's your would be snow would have stuck around in the shade!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

I think the 18z GFS may be ending up even colder than the 12z.

Looking at the hills from Salem and the Silver Falls webcam showing a fresh dusting it looks like my place just picked up a little snow!

Models show a bit of moisture increasing this evening down here...Would be nice to pick up a little more snow.

Really starting to look like January 2004 to me. A period of snow followed by icing. I don't see a good mechanism to scour out low level cold with this solution.

Maybe at my elevation I'll be above the freezing rain, though I know in 2004 Silver Falls was devastated by the icing.

The other nice thing about the delay in the moisture arriving is now most areas will be able to have another morning with very cold temps (Saturday morning). PDX will smash their record of 25 for the day!

I think it's pretty unlikely that we'll get a significant ice storm, generally the boundary layer is better at mixing out in February than it is in January and December.

Well said.

I was just about to chime in with this nugget of negativity.  Comparing this to 1-6-04 is a little broadbrushed.  It's emotionally crippling, yes, but the sun angle will play a fairly significant role in this event.

I will say there is not a lot of precedence for a major ice storm the 2nd week of February. Of course there isn't a lot of precedence for this type of airmass.

The only thing that will be unusual about this setup is the snow loaded Oregon Columbia Basin, which could help keep the bottom 1000' pretty cool.

Exactly.  Because any time there are puffy clouds abound, it's springlike.  That's a fact.

The sky looks spring-like today here.    Convective cumulus clouds and sun.     I don't care if its -10 with a 90mph wind in Bellingham.    The sky looks different than it has so far this year here.   Ironic since its an arctic air mass moving in.
