Phoenix got 0.16" and some thunderstorms overnight and there was a dewpoint spike from the 20s to the 50s.

Exact opposite here as dewpoints plummeted with the arrival of the Santa Ana Winds.

That upper low even affected southern Baja w/ water spouts reported off Cabo San Lucas.

No black spots on visible satellite tonight from the Thomas Fire and no new fires started with today's strong winds. That is good news. Still gotta wonder if some of the fires that started with the original Santa Ana event were arson.

Pattern change may happen next weekend, but we've seen this too many times before where forecast pattern changes or storms did not happen. Kevin Martin even predicts some low elevation snow, but what we really need is an atmospheric river.

The 'Skirball' fire in the Sepulveda Pass was due to a camp fire in a homeless settlement. I haven't read if arson was involved in any of the recent fires. The fires in Sonoma county/ Napa valley in October are still under investigation; electrical lines arcing in the intense wind is one explanation.

For whatever it is worth, CPC coming on board with idea of cold air mass over the West next week. Later this week could be cooler than it has been since Feb. Maybe a stray shower perhaps.

We have gained 3 minutes of daylight in the afternoon so far with tommorow's sunset about the same as one month ago. Barely noticeable unless you go out the same time every afternoon and look at the sunshine on the buildings. One of them had some sunlight that was not there last Friday.

I am wondering the same thing regarding the fires, whether they were arson or not. I also wonder if any of the northern CA fires, such as the one that affected Santa Rosa was arson, because there were so many fire starts in a relatively small area.

Good news is that the ridging is breaking down enough to allow a cold front this week w/ rain/ snow over much of California north of Pt Conception. Long range for early January is also encouraging.

Squeezed out the last 70° day for a while. Looking forward to clouds/ higher dew points. A shower would be even better but may easily end month totally rainless for first time since 2000 when only a trace occurred during Dec.

Once again a little bit more sunlight on the buildings in Irvine today at 4:35 PM than yesterday, but OCTA is one of the world's most pathetic bus systems there is. Today it was 10 minutes late, while yesterday it was 7 minutes late. Another day it was 3 minutes early. They have awful reviews on Yelp.

There always seems to be more traffic right before Christmas.

Mostly clear skies/ calm winds allowed the first sub 50F minimum since May 7th. I was afraid that clouds would keep the overnight temp in the 50's. Minus winds tonight could likely provide even cooler temps but a wind advisory is in effect. In any event it will be nice having cool temps and a remote chance of a shower today.

Yes this is the coldest air of the season and just in time for winter. NWS is forecasting 30's even for USC on Friday but that is subject to change since the overnight met [Rorke] tends to differ from model guidance. Christmas day, on the other hand, could be warm.

No rain here.  I think being in the shadow of the San Gabriel mountains is a definite factor. Often a north Pacific storm will generate southwest winds; that did not happen. Strong drying northwest winds ushered in cold air for lowest minimum in 9 months.

Winter is here and it will actually feels like it with the cold temperatures. Clear skies will allow for a good observance of the longest shortest shadow of the year today at solar noon, which has moved forward nearly 15 minutes since early November.

The question is how cold will it get tomorrow morning? Coldest air mass for the entire Southwest w/ frost/ freeze warnings. NWS adjusted Friday minimum temp to 42° @ USC. Wind is always the spoiler. Even with the first taste of winter, December will likely be one of the warmest historically.

According to silly astrologers Winter Solstice yesterday was supposed to be the worst day of the year or a day of bad luck. The day of "bad luck" for us, however, was December 4 when the Thomas Fire started, which was the date of the earliest sunset.

This dry repetitive Santa Ana wind pattern is really getting old and I really hope the pattern changes going into January. If this pattern continues well into January, it is going to drive me insane!

I really believe the Arctic warmth and ice melt is affecting CA's weather in a very negative way, and that this began back in the early to mid 2000's and it is just now become more pronounced during the last several years.

Just as I have been saying over on Weather West, the more I am looking at things, the more I believe that the rapid industrialization of Asia (especially China) and all of the resulting pollution and emissions may be potentially having huge consequences in the Arctic region.

Normally we can count on a break from warmth by, at least, December. 3 months of winter cool in the 60's to near 70F. More importantly the rain season uniquely marks winter by replenishing the water table. Since 2011 only one year has reached and/ or exceeded average rainfall. This past rain year ended w/ 20 inches; nearly all of it within late Dec and mid February and less than an inch since then and to present.

At least we can enjoy a few days of cool and chilly nights while the never-ending ridge relaxes a bit.

Thomas Fire is now the largest fire in modern California history. While I enjoy warm weather, I am sick of all the Santa Ana Winds and Red Flag Warnings as well. We desperately need rain here and if we could get enough to green up the hills and end the fire danger we could enjoy warm winter days without being on edge and worrying about new fires starting.

Good news is that no more strong Santa Ana Winds are expected for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and they keep lowering the high temperature forecast for those who enjoy the cool weather.

Survivor ended with a fire making challenge. If Survivor were played on Catalina Island during Santa Ana Winds, anybody could start a fire in a few seconds and they could burn down the whole island with no challenge at all.

It's another day where some coastal areas are warmer than Palm Springs. This is with no Santa Ana Winds.
