December 2015 in the Pacific Northwest

It turned to snow here at a pretty warm temperature. Knew some good stuff was happening just above me.

Yeah, it changed over at 36.5 or so here. I am actually surprised at how much it's accumulating considering it's still 34.9. It continues to steadily drop though. About 0.2 degrees every several minutes or so it seems.

Looks like moderate precip could hang around for the next hour or more, so that's good news.

Moderate snow coming down now. Starting to stick on the car and the other few surfaces that weren't already snowcovered.

It really wouldn't have to get a whole lot colder here for this to stick, it actually looks like proper snow now and not the wet stuff. If we could get some steady moderate precip like this outside of peak heating hours it might be interesting.

This time of year "peak heating" probably ends by 2pm or so. Hopefully we can hold onto precip for a few more hours.

This precip area seemed to hang over the Coast Range for several hours this morning, so maybe now it will hang over the metro for awhile.

Yeah, I'm kind of impressed that such a marginal airmass can actually produce straight snow during the day at my elevation.

Hoping we can hold on to these precip rates for a while longer and we get that precip this evening that the euro shows.

Driving from Carnation to Redmond and it seems elevation is playing a huge role in snow vs. rain. Halfway down my hill, changes to rain/snow, valley is rain, Novelty Hill is snow, Redmond is rain.

Amazing how just halfway down my hill, about 200ft difference, it goes from all snow to more-or-less all rain.

Yeah, happens all the time. So many times when I was kid we'd drive down novelty and as soon as you starting going downhill past 208th there would be no snow while we'd have 5" up at 550ft.

Was all snow up here earlier but it actually changed back to all rain here with the lighter precip. Snow is trying to mix back in again with some heavier returns overhead. Same strength as the ones that had all snow so im not sure why its not all snow, temp is lower than before.

Something seems to be wrong with my station because its now saying the dp is 8 with humidity at 30%.

Snow has stopped. An overachieving day in my book though, accumulating snow, needed 4wd to get to the lake house...and all I was really expecting was some rain/snow mix.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

I'd say in about an hour things will start to lighten up on the west side.

I'm actually now getting the same thing. 34F and there is some rain mixed in now. Warming somewhere aloft maybe.

The upper levels will only continue to cool. Its either some WAA on the backside of the precip band or just lower precip rates.

Currently have pretty strong precip rate so don't think it is that. I know we will continue to cool aloft but the question is if there will be any precip left by the time we are cool enough? If we have some steady-moderate precip this evening it might do it. The initial precip was delayed by many hours so will it hang out here a bit longer too?

Temp keeps dropping here too. Down to 33, but it just switched completely over to rain here at 1600'

Radar doesn't look all that impressive, will this precip really last into the evening?

ECMWF says still good precip over all of the Portland area from 4-7.
