12/28 - 12/29 Plains/MW/GL's Snow Event

Woke up to a nice surprise! 1.6" fell overnight. Radar wasnt looking very good when i went to bed so this turned out to be a nice surprise. Its like cotton....way dry.

Currently 4° and getting breezy with a few flurries.

12z NAM 3km may be hinting at a bit more snow this afternoon for those in N IL/E IA/WI...some better reflectivity showing up...

Friday afternoon/evening wave still looks good for IA/S MN/IL folks...NE trend looks to be holding with a stronger than expected wave compared to yesterdays runs....

 

Edit: I think we may be looking at low end advisories....

I like the looks of this wave on Friday afternoon/evening with the potential for some good meso scale banding.  Whoever is lucky  enough to sit underneath any of these bands for a longer period of time will cash in nicely.  Seen this happen many times before...James/Hawkeye/EastDubb/Bud may finally see appreciable accumulations for the first time this year....

This first wave has been a let down. Overnight, we have gotten what seems like a heavy dusting, maybe a quarter inch. Hopefully the additional snow showers that models have today can get us up to an inch at least.

NAM is further north with tomorrow’s system than other models. Clips my area. Hopefully for my sake that is just the NAMs normally north bias.

I was just going to post the same thing, Iowawx.  I still haven't seen a flake.  At 1:30am I went to sleep with no flakes yet and I woke up to a dusting with no flakes falling.  The first wave really crapped out for this area.  Models suggest there could still be a half inch or so around midday as a tail of precip swings through.

 

I hope I don't have to start worrying about tomorrow.  Overnight and this morning, the NAM has shifted the wave so far northeast I'm now on the sw edge of the heaviest band.  That would be a punch to the gut.

LOT says it’s ideal for good flake size...nice speed max swinging through just to our south which is good for us. I’d rather be north rather than on the southern fringes of these type of setups.

RGEM is further south than the NAM tomorrow and more widespread.  The NAM has an extreme cutoff on the south.  I haven't seen other models with as sharp a cut off yet.

Some nice snow falling here in East Dubuque. Some decent sized flakes, and looks like very light snow.

If I set my standards any lower I would be in the Marianas Trench as the "4 day snow threat" is quickly falling apart out here.

DMX going with about 2" for Friday but said potential for advisory is there with the models increasing qpf.

Also mentioned posdible snow again sat nite.

Their biggest concern is with the cold NW IA could hit -25 air temp!

GFS actually has the heaviest bands south of I80 tomorrow in E Iowa.  I'm discounting the NAM personally as it's by far the furthest north model.

I’d say 1-3” is a safe bet for Dubuque. Probably more towards 1-2. That’s nice, I suppose. But I’d rather just have the warm weather back if this is how winter is going to be all year.

Back edge of the snow moving through now here. Maybe 2” has fallen, although I haven’t measured yet. Dry air is really going to keep totals down for some of you. Temps throughout the entire column are simply too cold to get good flakes to form in the DGZ.

Yeah, I’m assuming you’re still kno dubuque, because id say the same. Don’t know if accumulations have been anything super special, but it’s been nice to see snow falling at least.. and without causing major issues on the roads.
