PNW February 2023 Weather Discussion - Meteorological winter finale

Looks like PDX pulled off a high of 39 so far. If it holds that’s 4 sub-40 days in the last week of February including a sub-freezing high on 2/23. Pretty impressive run.

It'll be 77 here tomorrow. Where did our winter go.

I bet I see a high of 38 on April Fool's day.

The upslope event on top of my house in the Port Angeles foothills from this radar loop was insane. 34" in under 24 hours.

We are going to end February with a 41.1/28.9 average. 5 sub freezing highs with three separate troughs (2/14, 2/22-24, 2/28).

Winter storm “Pax” Feb 13 2014 had the heaviest snowfall rates I’ve ever seen outside a snow squall.

19” fell in under 6hrs. Huge positive bust, forecast was for roughly 5-8” then a dry slot.

That’s bonkers dude. It just dawned on me last night that it’s been a whopping 7 years since January 2016, which is the last time we something to that magnitude.

Where does the time go? Whoosh.

It snowed every day for almost 2 weeks after that event. 5’ in 8 days. I was so tired of shoveling. Snow pack until April 15th. Got a new dog on March 1st that year and the poor pup didn’t get to poop in grass for 6 weeks. Doubt I ever see that again.

Today’s view of Mt. Pilchuck featuring some snow here at home too! Have about an inch in grassy areas, added to the quarter inch this morning puts me at 9” for the season. Just need one more inch for my 5th consecutive 10”+ winter.

Yeah the torching has been wild this winter.

Mid-March will probably be cool/wintry but after that it looks like a quick return to warmth in late March/early April. I can’t find any sustained cold signals right now. :(

I love the shoveling, haha. Getting a great workout while experiencing my favorite weather is a win-win.

Sounds like that was your version of 2009/10 here. Like you, I’ll probably never experience anything like that again. I’m just thankful I was alive to experience it. 😍

Sorry people...I'm not going to pretend to be happy for all of the people who got snow today...pretty much everyone except here it would appear.

I hate this fukking place with a passion.  One of the biggest regrets of my life was not getting out of this hell hole when I was younger when it would have been much easier.

This is a cautionary tale for any young people on here who don't like the climate.  It will only get worse for you if you don't leave when you have the chance.

We had a few cold days in mid April last year. I thought it was impressive we could pull off afternoon temperatures in the low 40's out here that time of year. It's still a roller coaster though, I remember us being 70's both before and after that brief cool off.

Out of everyone on the forum that has mentioned moving to a snowier climate I truly hope you are able to sometime in the not too distant future. Life is too short to not enjoy what you truly love! Seems like HawksTwelve has not regretted their move one bit! But if you need to stay in western Washington but are able to relocate up near me I can show you the exact best areas to look!

I think I'm ready to go into my off season hiatus from the forum.  Today was a really hard one take.  It's not fun being constantly angry for an entire day.  Just goes with the territory living in a shittty microclimate within an at best so so climate.

I'll see if I can muster up enough interest to at least keep an eye on the coming ridge bridge situation.

Bro my seasonal total is 0.5” and it’ll be in the 70s again this week. Count your blessings.

This is a brutal hobby. Can’t count how many times a storm has busted here or rug pulled at the last minute. Best thing you can do is to a coping mechanism and make long term plans for a move (that’s what I’m doing).

I set some rules with my wife for the next home we buy: above 500 feet and/or east of I-5 and between Lynnwood and the Snohomish/Skagit border.

I feel like that’s not too much to ask 😂

Yea it’s marginally better. I’m at 600 feet right next to the foothills.  Thinking of just skipping town and moving to Wenatchee or Spokane though. I need guaranteed gold.

Yep. That whole “snow won’t be as special if I see it all the time” thing is just a form of cognitive dissonance.

I’m attached to this region, yet I know I will have to move somewhere else to get my weather fix. And I’ll enjoy it just as much if not more.

Generally great areas snow wise as well since you are in the CZ Territory, however I don’t know their exact microclimates from spot to spot like I do in the 7-Lakes area where I grew up (west of Smokey Point) or my current area at the Snohomish/Skagit border so I couldn’t tell you which areas in those areas would be the best.

I don't really want insane amounts of snow, but I want somewhere cold enough so there is always a reasonable amount on the ground.

I would wager a guess that most lowland areas did not get snow last night. Posts in this forum are not a representative sample for two reasons:

  1. People are more likely to post to brag about snow they got than to report getting skunked.
  2. Posters here tend to be weather weenies who do things like select their neighbourhood at least in part based on how much snow the local microclimate gets.

Bottom line is a set of snowier-than-average microclimates with a bias to reporting wins and staying silent about losses. Totally not representative.

There's been times I've checked random highway cams during an event when there's people coming out of the woodwork here reporting score after score, and the vast majority of them show absolutely zilch.

Part of my frustration is how badly I F'd up when I chose this place.  There are great places within a few miles of here, but I was totally unaware how incredibly variable this area is at that time.
