Pretty quick change in the weather today.  The sun was out this morning and it was mild.  Now raining moderately.  0.10" since 3 PM.

I’m not a fan of the strong ridging being depicted across

eastern Siberia/Asia and the NW-Pacific on the 12z EPS during week two.

 

That pattern shuts down poleward-vertical wave activity fluxes via the NPAC, which would allow the polar vortex to tighten rapidly during the second half of November, which would also stabilize the tropical upper troposphere and weaken the MJO activity.

 

Hopefully it’s a transient pattern that doesn’t last long enough to screw things up. There is reason to believe this is merely a short term intraseasonal excursion, but these patterns can sometimes get locked into constructive interference loops that can perpetuate them beyond their previous cycle period(s). Who knows.

How about the pattern in place this coming week? Isn’t that gonna stretch the vortex out?

Yes, but it’s too early to matter in regards to Nov/Dec, especially if the east-Asia/NW-Pacific pattern verifies as depicted on the EPS.

 

The troposphere-stratosphere connection is pretty weak anyway at this time of year. That typically changes in a huge way from ~ Nov 15th onwards.

WSU is the team to beat in the North.   The Ducks technically still have 5 conference games left and the rest of the teams only have 3 now.  

 

Looks like one of my sons will be a Coug next fall.    Might have one at UW and one at WSU!

Oregon will probably at least lose to Utah, so WSU may win the north. 

 

Oregon has a good QB, but they are a good 1-2 years away from a talent perspective. Herbert is also extremely overrated. Like our good governor here in Oregon, he is definitely not a leader, and he not only stares down receivers he turns his whole body towards his intended receiver. I expect him to crash and burn in the NFL, but who knows. I thought the same of Goff.

 

Oregon's recruiting is off the charts good this year, we will see how they end up developing that talent.

Oh yeah, I follow recruiting so I know about him. Didn't realize he played at Mt. Si though. I know the Ducks coaching staff really like him. I think he is their only QB commit this cycle so far, and I don't think they are recruiting any other QB's that hard. Really trying to focus on defense.

They are playing very well after some early season struggles. If they end up playing WSU in the Pac-12 title game I expect they will beat them pretty easily.
