2/14 - 2/17 Cutter and Panhandle Hook

Snowfall rates are starting to slow a bit here in Omaha... however it sounds like lots of reports of 5" to 7" of snow across the metro which I just verified with 6.5" in my backyard. What a SWEET surprise this morning! Plenty of reports of traffic tie-ups on local roads and highways due to stuck vehicles, cars sliding off roads, and accidents... so I decided to work from home today 😀

Looking at the radar I am thinking I could pick up another 1 to 1-1/2 inches of snow over the next few hours - which would get me to 8".

I'm currently getting the heaviest snow of the season.  Good size flakes are dumping.  Unfortunately, it will not last much longer as the dry slot is about to shut it off.  Big snow totals require this kind of heavy snow to last for several hours, but we just can't get that here.

I just measured 7" at 9:00am. So I tacked on another 1.8" since my first measurement which comes to a bit over 1" per hour. I don't like that the wind is increasing and blowing it around making measuring accurately challenging. I'm still a spotter for DVN NWS so hopefully my report will show up on the map eventually.

I just measured about 3.7".  The wind is beginning to play a factor in measuring.  I'm happy with the total so far, but there are bigger reports all around me (se, sw, n).

Central Iowa's turn to get hit hard.  I like the way this looks on radar and seems to be rotating this way.

Interesting that Des Moines is still under a WWA... honestly they should be upgraded to WSW with the deformation band incoming - this thing should drop another 2-4 inches on top of what they already have.

Just went out and measured and I am up to 7.5" in my backyard. Snow rates are really starting to diminish now - however getting to 8" shouldn't be a problem now.

It looks like the heavy snow band from this morning is right on Des Moines' doorstep... get ready over there.

That is awesome.  Man, there was major disappointment for the Eastern NE folks yesterday when it looked like this was going south.  Looks like the GFS was right all along, who'd have thunk it.

Haha, so much for that "sharp" cut-off over the Omaha metro that was predicted on most of the short-term models even up to very early this morning... I am glad that you got to share in the fun up in Fremont as well.

This looks to be our biggest snowstorm here in Omaha since 2/21/2021 (which was 7.6" at Eppley).

Bah.  The latest RAP and HRRR show only another 2" left for my area.  The upper low to the west looks great now, but it's moving eastward along the IA/MO border (rather than ene) and models also show the heavy snow out west weakening as it passes through eastern Iowa.  Models always had the heaviest snow here in the morning, with lighter snow spreading across the area the rest of the day.

The snow is really blowing around now, too, which won't help it pile up.

Areas just west and of Des Moines are getting hammered right now.  Man, I hope that stays in tact as it rotates through later.

Can confirm.

My son estimates 4" as off 30 mins ago , pounding now. Should make 6". No warning, but did increase totals here to basically warning criteria.

GFS and others for the win, HRRR not so good.

The two loudest sounds known to man: a gun that goes bang when it is supposed to go click and a gun that goes click when it is supposed to go bang.

I measured between 3.5" and 4" this morning before I left for school. We had a late start; my driveway will have to be scooped after I get home from school! I had about a foot in my driveway. If it wasn't for the dry air we had to over come last night I'm guessing my totals would have been doubled. Oh well, I'm just glad we didn't get skunked!
