January 2019 Weather in the Pacific Northwest

North Bend and Enumclaw are the "hot" spots in the state of WA this morning... both areas are in the low to mid 50s and both have a downsloping east wind.

I love the downslope effect out here... its usually warm and it really dries everything out.    And its fairly dominant with split flow in the winter.

The warmest I got this week was 48 and my warmest low was 37. I have not hit 50 since December 20th. In 2016-17 I went over 2 months without hitting 50.

Yeah the EURO wants to totally blast me with wind. Usually seems like their maps are a bit overdone with wind. I sure hope.

We're slowly being trained to except this climate. It is nothing like is used to be.

I have talked to some very old timers here, who will talk about their parents and grandparents saying that they had winters that were either very snowy, or very warm.  Some winters it did not snow at all, and it was so warm they did not have to wear coats during winter.  Not sure how far back that goes, probably more than 100 years,

Without the east wind through Snoqualmie Pass... the trees out here would be absolutely draped in moss.   There are some isolated sheltered areas off exit 34 to my east that do not get the east wind and the difference is incredible.   You can pinpoint the exact line where the east wind is blocked.

For the vast majority of the Snoqualmie Valley... the east wind is just a normal part of fall and winter and I really enjoy it.   We frequently have periods when everything dries out completely.   And it also helps immensely with snow here when there is cold air in the basin.

Yeah I wouldn't mind it. Though if I lived up that way I would probably want to live a bit further from Seattle. At least an hour away.

You would be in Easton or Cle Elum then.     That would be impossible for us... my wife would never commute to Bellevue and have to deal with the pass every day.   And we like being relatively close to Issaquah for a variety of reasons.

The Cle Elum area is beautiful though.

I have heard rumors of large subdivisions and a commercial center near Stampede Pass but have never been able to find it.

EURO still showing a couple inches up here tomorrow night. I am expecting to see snow falling, any accumulations are probably a 50/50 proposition.

The North Bend weather station near me has had one single day with a high below 40 so far... that was a 39.3 degrees on November 9th.

That station has also recorded 9 days with a low below freezing this season.

The last 3 days have had highs of 57, 53, and now 54 so far today.

I would not want to cross the pass daily either. I would probably want to live further north.

Back in the 90’s I remember my dad worked worked with a guy that would commute every day from Cle Elum to Everett (swing shift at Boeing) I would sure never do it but the guy didn’t mind it apparently...but that was back when traffic wasn’t quite as bad.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

And yesterday the pass was closed for a good part of the day.  That happens several times every winter.  We then get all the traffic through Leavenworth that I-90 would get, plus the regular US2 traffic.

If i were to move and stay in Western Wa my top pick would be lake Cushman. There are a few areas you can live that are 1300ft with plowed roads. 30 minutes to Shelton and tons of snow. The picnic table pic was a 24 inch snowfall overnight when i had a place up there in 2012.

I went to Lake Cushman this past summer. Beautiful area.

On another note, are people having trouble seeing my snow maps? I can see them, even on the posts where people reply and say they cannot.

Hate to bring this up, but the first half of January is suddenly looking like a total torch. Probably the biggest change in the models over the past 2-3 days.

Yeah...hopefully we can salvage the end of January or have a cold start to February.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

I went to Lake Cushman this past summer. Beautiful area.

On another note, are people having trouble seeing my snow maps? I can see them, even on the posts where people reply and say they cannot.

I have had no problem seeing them.

The place next to us was for sale, just sold a few weeks ago...we could have been neighbors!

Yeah I would live up in your area. I see there is a place (town?) called Silverton east of Granite Falls. I might feel at home out there...

Commuting isn't a huge deal for me, my current commute is almost an hour.

Cliff is hitting it hard -saying it is the worst to hit Seattle this year. I think that we have had similar if not stronger winds back in December. Major is possible - but appears to be near the top of the envelope.

Very common with split flow.   Time for CA to be in the storm track... we have to share.    ;)

Yeah. I think its because you are viewing on your phone. Usually when I am looking at the forum on my phone I cannot see the maps Tim or Shawnigan Lake post. They show up like that.

That could be, though I have never had an issue with their maps showing up on my phone.
