This event definitely has a taste of 1996 up here in BC and Whatcom. The warm moist air is having hard time to push the arctic air out because the cold airmass is so deep. I dont think I have seen this deep airmass for more than 20 years (1996 or 1998). The only differece about this event is no pineapple express. It is still well below freezing up here with the blow from the east.

 

The numbers from BC are utterly insane.  Just one examples is Cathedral Point (west of Bella Coola).  13F with winds sustained 70 gusting to 83.  I can't even imagine how brutal that would be.  Below zero temps still extend well down the Fraser Valley.  This came so close to being an epic event for all of WA.  We have to call it a win coming in the month of January and all.

 

Looks like the reign of front loaded winters has possibly come to an end and the door could be open to some great times ahead.

The ECMWF shows even more snow for my area tomorrow night than previous runs.  Perfect moisture trajectory.

Kind of odd to see 500mb thicknesses drop to 516dm with onshore flow but that's what the GFS has been showing tomorrow night. It's a shame we couldn't tap into more of that very cold air pouring out from the BC North and Central Coasts.

Looks like 39 for a high today, temp dropped back to 37, only the 2nd high below 40 this week, 38 yesterday. However, most of our snow is gone due to the south monster.

Finally above freezing. 33 here and windy.

Some really wild temp swings going on up here...Jumped 8 degrees in 10 minutes and I'm now sitting at 45F. I don't know how long my snow will survive this. Meanwhile just got back from a drive where 3 miles away and the same elevation it was 35F.

 

Also Whidbey Island must be losing power because there's a ton of transformer flashes on the horizon.

The ECMWF does show an area of snow 2-3 inches in SE King County. Stretching from Issaquah down to Pierce County.

Walla Walla goes from 22 to 40 within the 1 hour obs.

 

Winds gusting nearly 50 mph.

I was surprised how off the forecast was. Abbotsford had a high of 10F without windchill during the event. That’s D**n cold! It shows that we still can get top tier events. The coming solar minimum might get the climate we used to have back for the 2020’s.

PDX friends! There is a last-ditch attempt at "conversational" snow (as Nelsen calls it) sometime in the next two days. At least according to the GFS and GEM (and kinda the ICON). We'll see, but it could be pretty.

On another note, interesting that most models are painting some more pretty snowflakes on Friday. I'll make sure to have a camera handy this time
