Part II- January 2020 Obs and Discussion

So the warm up last night never made into the Snoqualmie Valley.   And then western edge of that moisture band clipped us and dumped another 2 inches of snow in the last couple hours.  Schools were going to be open... then 2 hours late... now closed.

I was down in North Bend at 6 a.m. to get milk and it was dumping snow even down there and the roads were still completely snow covered in town from the previous events and getting worse at that time.   And there are huge snowbanks everywhere.   We are doing our best Skykomish impression out here.   I assume tomorrow morning will be the same.   Then it will finally start to melt.

Here is a live view of NB... there must be at least a foot of snow on the ground right now in the valley.   Its not much different than up here.

Thanks! When does this event begin?

Running the loop... it looks like a c-zone right over your area from about 8 p.m. through 2 a.m. and then it shifts north and falls apart.

Hey, there's a town called Dewey. Does it have lower solar than other places in Whatcom County?

LOL it’s a road, but it is down in a tight little valley and depending on the sun angle it definitely has lower solar!

06z Euro continuing to paint some snow totals over SE King County tonight and tomorrow. Not sure how much I believe it. Also fair to mention this is a little bit less than the 00z showed.

With the way this week has gone, I'm going to expect nothing and then be pleasantly surprised if it ends up verifying.

Pleasant surprise for Eastern suburbs if true.

Was the perfect set up destroy my snow last night.  Perfect angle to give me a 30 mph south wind which almost never happens here. We do much better with a sw wind gradient because it will be dead calm 99% of the time. SE or SW is much better here. Still  few inches on ground but trees are bare.

eah so true, but I can’t say I’ve ever seen this before

I gave up waiting for the warm-up to hit my area. I really wanted to be outside and feel it happen, but I got too tired and went to bed. Records indicate there was a similar temperature spike here. During that time, the snow plow finally made it to my street, leaving behind a film of slush. It’s now refreezing.

Yet the Fairhaven ferry terminal and stations on the Lake Whatcom shore are in the low forties. Given how a) stubborn and B) thin the cold layer is, I think we’re in for some freezing rain showers today.

This is the most interesting climate of any place I have lived. I love it!

Wild swings in Bellingham over the last 12 hours... it shoots up into the mid 40s in a matter of minutes and stays that way for a few hours and then crashes instantly back into the 20s when the wind switches from SE to N.

I would love an opportunity for snow that would have to melt.

40 mph gusts at 45F last night really destroyed my snow cover. Probably lost about half the depth going from 8" to 3-4". Would love to see those Euro maps verify though.

Not a troll post... just interesting. There is some warm air coming north on Sunday per the ECMWF.

20200116-062301.jpg

I think Sunday is a much better bet for the big warm-up in Whatcom County and Greater Vancouver than today or tomorrow. May take a few more days yet in the eastern Fraser Valley.

It's called clown range for a reason.

That is why i'm moving soon. As i get older i could care less if it snows knowing it will be gone in 12hrs.

you know there is this old snowmizer I met that has a remote cabin in the middle of nowhere and gets all the snow and cold one could hope for! I should introduce you to him.

Yes a little after that wave of snow in the morning the wind shifted from the south. After that it seemed to switch back and forth between the south wind and the easterly drift.

I found this really precise elevation map of the Portland area. It can show where the low level cold air seeps into my area.attachicon.gif20200116_065620.jpg

Do you have a link for that map?  I can't enlarge it.  Thanks!  Sitting at 38f.
