At 9.7" this is going to be my 3rd snowiest January in the 9 winters I have been here. Not bad.

Looks like at least 15,000 people have lost power in SW Oregon due to the snow storm down there. I have not been able to find any storm reports of how much has fallen, but Cave Junction was just getting nuked last night per cams. Medford usually is pretty good about measuring their snow at the airport. Looks like at least 1-2 in Medford. Grants Pass seems to have been really hit hard overnight.

Tim you will be closer to that 25 inch total by Saturday morning.

I think we might be close to done here. Maybe an inch tomorrow during the day. Saturday morning looks like 1,500 foot snow levels here and then it's in the 40s even here by afternoon.

I am officially satisfied with this event. We've hit double digits on snowfall on the season so no matter what happens we will keep 2014-15 as the only winter in the single digits for snow since I moved here.,

Here’s a brutal truth: Portland averages only about 4" of snow per season. Seattle averages about twice that (7") and Vancouver about twice what Seattle gets (15"). So if it seems like Portland often gets skunked on snow events, that’s because it does. If you really can’t stand it, and want to see more snow, consider moving someplace snowier (applies wherever you live).

Even EUG averages some 5” a year, tho that is skewed by huge events and also brought bigly down by abnormally shittty stretches like 96-03.

The Willamette Valley truly can suck for snow. There are years like 1992-93 or 2016-17 where everything breaks right with every event, but usually it takes a minor miracle to produce widespread accumulating snow here. A major part of why I chose to move to 1600' was because I wanted to live in a snowier climate. The downside is a 2-3" snow event inevitably becomes less special, but the upside is unless it is a historically lame winter there will always be at least some snow every winter.

Sun looks good. I must be loosing my edge i am starting to like the sun. The thing i love about Chesaw is it will snow then be blue bird blue sky and cold. When the snow is that dry it is much easier to manage and enjoy. I use a leaf blower to clear my deck and drive over there.

Some views of the cabin we’ve been staying at. About 12 miles west of Bend. Definitely getting my snow and cold fix out here.

Pretty sure Redding actually averages more snow than Portland, interestingly enough. 5" vs 4". You'd think our potential would be better since we have the Gorge, but nope. As recent models and events have shown those dry east winds can actually eat moisture.

Was only a matter of time

Should I run all posts about what the EPS shows in the long range through you first to make sure it will not upset anyone here?

EPS is garbage and just a goofy random model... and no one really wants to know what might be coming.

One of the characteristics of the PNW lowlands is the astounding variability of snow amounts from year  to year. Because of an ample moisture supply, the daily snowfall records here are more like what one would expect in a snow belt city. In fact, the major Canadian city with the highest daily snowfall on record is… Victoria!

This is part of what makes people here so obsessed about snow, I think. We know it's possible for our world to be utterly transformed in nearly an instant by a thick blanket of snow, because it has happened in the past and will happen again.

However, there is a statistical price to be paid for this ability to occasionally hit the snow jackpot: a mode that is considerably less than the mean. In other words, most years won’t even reach the paltry mean snowfalls I mentioned earlier.

If you don't like it then ignore it.   I thought it looked fairly zonal and probably good for the mountains.

I will post long range EPS maps... warm or cold.   Because we are trying to figure out what might be coming on here.   If you don't like that information then keep it to yourself.
