That’s a shame. Spent a lot of time playing in that greenway as a kid. Especially that specific area since it’s close to where my Grandparents live in the Vancouver heights.

Sounds like they got it under control without damage to any homes at least.

Good evening from Port Angeles

Quite the view of the straights this evening. I’ve been watching the winds blow in from the west. Very slow process as it worked its way east.  I Stupidly enjoyed this 🤣.  I’m also attaching a pic of Devils Punch Bowl on lake Crescent .  Pretty amazing spot her in the PNW !!!

Welcome to the northwest almost every August thru October these days!

I thought this shit would be elevated (and it is currently) but models are projecting 100-200+ mcg/m^3 of smoke at the surface by midweek. Mountain waves/dry advection deepening the BL into the smoke layer, apparently. Bad timing. Would be “code purple” air quality.

Might be typical stuff by PNW standards, but for this region those values are at the extreme end, especially considering the fires are about 1000 miles away.

Just need some f**king rain already.

east coast getting a taste of the crap we seem to deal with every summer now

Y’all can take it back whenever you want. Been recurring off/on for a month. Have no idea how/why Shawnigan enjoys this stuff.

A few days ago I went for a late evening run and developed allergy/flu-like symptoms immediately afterwards. Didn’t think it would affect me but was I wrong.

Cue the weenie tag emoji from Jesse. 🌭

Not exactly on topic but can see the pyrocumulus activity associated with the fires in Quebec despite the dry BL. Looks almost like volcanic ash plumes they’ve gotten so big.

I wonder if this will keep temps down tomorrow. Only potential upside, if any.

I say this understanding full well the hellscape that is east coast heat and humidity, my experiences out here with the incredibly heavy smoke scenarios during heat waves, the smoke almost makes the heat feel worse despite the temp being a little cooler.

At the rate this is going... there might not be a game 5.   You need to be a Panthers fan the next game!

You’ll get used to it! Time to buy air purifiers if you don’t have them already. And a big box of HVAC filters. And bookmark the PurpleAir website!

The most annoying thing about wildfire smoke is how horribly persistent it is. All that extra heating from absorption in the mid levels further suppresses rain and amplifies orographic blocking.

Little different over there.   Most of the country gets rain over the next week.   Except for Seattle, Portland, and Phoenix of course.

Looool. Models have been falsely advertising rainfall for weeks now. Always busts. The GFS has been especially awful. Projected 1” last Saturday. Ended up with a cloudless sky and haze.

Oh and now it’s showing fantasy Gulf/Caribbean hurricanes again. Every year at this time it does the same thing.

I hate that model with a passion. It could go up in flames tomorrow and the world would be better off for it.

New EPS seasonal thru Dec 2023 has every month finishing drier than average in the PNW, except July which is slightly wetter than average.

Also each month warmer than average. July is the only month with 500mb troughing, and it’s a weak signal, and still warmer than average at 2m.

As a parent, it’s got to be a relief that Dallas knocked out Seattle and avoided what would have been a very torturous WCF for the little lad.

I think smoke has a cooling effect. We dropped into the 40s this morning, almost 10°F cooler than forecasted. Maybe it augments the nocturnal inversion/BL decoupling somehow? Would have expected the opposite.

It’s ~ 4hrs after sunrise and just now the sun became visible as a faint, dark red disk. Like a cloudy day with a red hue. Wonder how temps will be affected.

You have more faith than I.

I do suspect there’s a higher logic to things, probably beyond human comprehension (analogous to how mathematics are beyond the comprehension of a bacterium). But I can’t bring myself to believe there’s an old man watching me, deciding whether to relegate me to bliss or eternal damnation.

If I’m wrong…oops.

Our experience out here has been no effect on nighttime temps and significant cooling of daytime temps when smoke is thick enough to dim sunlight.

Makes sense, I'm not sure I view God in that sense either. I believe there are things beyond my comprehension, and that one way or another our universe was formed and try as we may, the human mind cannot really wrap it's mind around that. Whatever force it was which created us and dictated the laws of nature, whether chance or intelligent design, it is a power and process far more complex than we can imagine in our finite minds. I like to say we all believe in God(s), we just call them by different names.

Smoke is really a cold lovers dream... you still get the cold nights and then daytime temps go nowhere.   I remember some days in the 60s with thick smoke that should have been in the 80s or 90s based on the upper level pattern.   No wonder Andrew loves wildfire smoke so much.

I don’t follow the weather much this time of year but the last 2 days were abnormal and unexpectedly impactful. It was solidly windy, we had lots of limbs, leaves and 2 trees come down around our property.
