June (July) 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Looks like the stoic stork made a special delivery at the Tobias household!

What is your last name?  Please post it here.

And I can do something about depression setting in from a complete lack of sun in the summer.    No need to be stoic about something I can actually change... which is my location.

It’s funny the same couple people who can’t handle it being 10F below average currently seem to agree with you that 10F above average is a perfect summer day.

Its not about the temperature for me.  Its entirely about the lack of sun.

I would be just as happy right now with a 68-degree sunny day.   So many strawmen with you today!

Ironically... Phil and I would both be in heaven in Portland in the summer.    More sun and a little warmer for me and much cooler and drier for Phil.

And yet we sit on here for years arguing about preferences.    Its just so silly.

And the Portland folks sit here saying its beautiful out so what is your problem?   The problem is that I don't have your weather.    Might have to move down there!

Locked into a daily thunderstorm pattern here with measurable rainfall on 7 consecutive days and counting now with temps in the 60's and 70's.

I think it's very pleasant and would love a pattern like this to stick around all summer!

Low was a few degrees cooler this morning than yesterday. Awesome crisp air right now, though most folks from Portland might call it COLD, I know my former self probably would say that.

78-80 today.

based on your photos you seem to have done better this week for sun than some of us closer to the water. We have had absolutely no clearing this week here which is crazy even for June gloom.

I took a couple pics during brief sun breaks to celebrate seeing the sun. Over the last week... the only day with any meaningful sun here was on Monday.

Nice to see the marine layer making a comeback. It has been almost non existent down here since 2012. My guess would be we see under 1/2” of rain this month, but it may very well be our first below average July in 8 years. July on average is our driest month with about 0.65” of precipitation on average.

Tuesday and Friday look wet and gloomy on the 12Z GFS... but it actually shows it improving significantly next weekend. I hope we see the end of these wet, cold systems dropping down after this week. We normally have a full month here with almost no rain and mid-July is a typical starting point. Even years like 1954 achieved that small feat.

I haven't had any measurable rain since mid June but I'm sure some stray thunderstorm dumps 1/2" > 1" next time I get one.

I just had to check in considering this very unusual (especially by 21st century standards) regime we have entered.  A few days ago the models appeared to be hinting at a more normal July pattern setting in, but recent runs show a continuation of unusually cool conditions persisting.  Today's 12z GFS has thicknesses below 552 on the 10th of July.  Pretty insane by recent standards.  Jesse has to be breathing a sigh of relief!  You certainly have to say we were more than due for a cool July.

On the ENSO front....even the ECMWF has cool ENSO for this fall and winter as the deepest solar min in about 200 years continues.

On the political front...I am in wholehearted agreement not a word should be spoken in the weather threads and probably not in any thread.  I am 100% worn out on it.

The first 3 days of July were not able to exceed 67 degrees here.  No easy trick.

I would really like to see some clear days during this cool regime.  It could happen depending on some the finer details.  It's like there is nowhere to turn to feel normal this year.  Everything seems to be off its axis.

Should I start making statements attempting to coax things out of you that reinforce my preferences now, or wait until later?

I was pretty impressed to see Bellingham pull off highs of 58 both yesterday and on the 1st. That is a 21st century benchmark for cool July highs at that location, and they already did it twice this month.

I honestly think my ever-optimistic elderly parents are slipping into depression now between the pandemic and the terrible weather.

Not sure what to do about it because we really can't go see them and they can't travel. But they are definitely down and won't talk about it and never complain.
