June (July) 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

Would be nice to get a good old fashioned heat wave at least once this summer.☹️

We've had a couple summers last decade where August ended up being the hottest month. I don't see a reason that shouldn't happen this year.

September has potential also.

It’s July 5th. First day of summer.

Where I used to live that applied maybe 1 or 2 times out of 10. It might have only been a normal thing in the 1950's but not in this current

day and age.

One of a few things in Klamath Falls that used to be more common back then was late-November snowstorms, big ones. Many wouldn't believe how easy it is to have a bare ground on Thanksgiving day here.

Ones like 1955 with a Nov total over 2' feet, or 2010 with around 18" and below 0 temperatures before turkey day (-4 was a daily record for 11/24/2010).

1961 featured a single storm dropping 16" in one day, I've only seen that kind of storm in January since I have lived here, so that is unreal for November standards.

November has been pretty mild for the past decade. We have not had very much snow in November in the 9 years I have lived up here. We had a slushy 6.5” in 2011 and that is still my monthly record for November.

We were unpacking our uhaul truck on 11/30/2010 with close to a foot on the ground and before knowing this area very well I thought that would be a regular thing for the time of year. Turns out the season doesn't come full force usually until mid-December.

The OR-KL-5 (cocorahs) station here has missing data of Nov 2010 and still totals 12.50". I combined a bit of grandmother's own observations in with what that station got and I came up with at least over 18".

That same station is reputable, in '16-'17 both my house and this station is within less than an inch of each other for seasonal total.

The majority of EPS members keep 850mb temps below average west of the cascades for the next 15 days.

Y’all are sitting pretty. No heat in sight.

Unfiltered phase diagrams reflect a complete absence of WPAC forcing since late May/early June.

It’s all IO/EHEM so far. Haven’t seen this type of regime since the pre-2013 years.

Low pass equatorial WPAC/IPWP subsidence continues unabated on the EPS.

But there’s the aforementioned CCKW/MJO-lite, which theoretically opens up (a few) dynamic pathways for transient warmth in the PNW region, all else being equal.

So maybe a warm spell somewhere in the July 15-25 window? Wouldn’t last long, and it could fail to materialize altogether, but don’t be surprised if models trend warmer for that particular timeframe.

My favorite place in the summer...on the water with the warm sun on my face and music playing. Does not need to be hot. Today feels very warm out here.

I’ve never seen Tim post a picture of a drizzly, foggy day.

I actually have. But the sunny days make me happy. In all seasons.

It been unusually calm up here. Normally sunny summer days have a decent north wind on Lake Sammamish. Today its been almost perfectly calm. Flags in people's yards are hanging straight down.

Gfs doesn’t look very July like the next 10 days.

It's funny, I was going back looking through PDX's records to see when they last had a comparably cool start to July. Once I hit the summer of 2000 and before, it started getting harder to find Julys that didn't have some cool weather in the first 7-10 days of the month, like we've seen this year.

I know it’s not really unusual for the first few days to be cool and have some rain in July...but if the gfs verifies it’ll be mid July and still seeing cool wet weather. Either way even in the cool wet pattern there’s still been some pretty nice days mixed in. I say keep it going.

Great 4th yesterday. Perfect weather.

Not sure if Maple Valley is always like this on the 4th, but there was a near constant barrage of fireworks last night. At least 3 hours straight where literally not one second passed without a boom and flash. Reminded me of Ocean Shores back in the day.

I’ve been in MV since 2015 and this was by far the craziest year for fireworks. Had a neighbor still letting them off after 2 AM. The ironic part is that there was less firework noise a few years ago before the became officially “banned”.
