I still call it fake cold since snow is not a possibility with it. I still enjoy it…However I enjoy it even more after a snow event since it preserves the snow on the ground for way longer.
Currently 45 degrees.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

It seems it occasionally can lead to snow down south when the inversion gets deep enough near the gorge

Think we had some fake cold snow in Moses Lake as well that lead to some light snow when my mom still lived there. Not much of a chance here at my place however.

Starting to remind me of the year the 534 thickness line never made it to Eugene.

We lived in CA during the 1997-98 Nino... also a slow start that really ramped up later.

Doesn’t feel like the worst analog.

The first half of January was quite cold that winter.  There was a decent Fraser River outflow with snow just before mid month.

Maybe true for where most of the country’s population is located. It’s a western phenomenon, as it is largely driven by terrain.

Yeah with the exception of CAD events, the boundary layer almost always mixes out here. Clear-air inversions are basically impossible to maintain.

I suspect the return of storm activity (as modeled by the GFS/GEFS) will be focused farther south, into CA/OR more than WA/BC, when push comes to shove. The deposition and transport of momentum is now beginning to resemble that of the clean/canonical El Niño composite.

It’s actually been awhile since we’ve had one of those.

Without a doubt the 1990s were the king of CAD. During the 1994 ice storm we had a period of ZR with temps in the mid-teens. My parents took a video of themselves in the street which was covered in 3/4” of rock solid ice. Each drop froze instantaneously.

had a good one (or bad for that matter) in early '04 (may have been late '03) I think it was, in Columbia, SC.  1/2"-3/4" of ice as well, freaking car doors all froze over, car was encased and literally froze to the driveway pavement

Our area got lucky the last couple times. Dec 2022 wasn't that heavy and most of the precip was sleet, and during the huge Feb 2021 storm where areas a bit to the south got 1.75"+ of ice, we were on the border and had 4-5" of snow with some sleet and ice

Definitely a lot less common up here in Puget sound. The ice storm last December really didn’t end up being that bad. It was enough accumulation to wreak havoc on the roads but the tree damage wasn’t anything like January 2012.

Timing was a huge piece of luck as well. If the ice had started accumulating in the middle of the day it would have been total chaos on the roads. Instead, people stepped outside in the morning and saw the ice and mostly turned around and went back inside. I couldn't even get from my door to my car if I had wanted to.
