Yeah the SE valley got screwed with this bigtime. Really hoping we can make up for this with a snowstorm at some point.

Feels like it’s been a long time since we’ve had a proper -10c 850s airmass hit here.

Yep. This low level crap gives us a taste of winter, which is nice, but it comes with a high price. Where have the BC coastal hugging spinners been lately? We're about due for one. I doubt it will happen this winter though.

Just feels hopeless at this point. Like our summers continuing to get hotter and drier which will ultimately lead to a large portion of the metro area being destroyed by fires.

Maybe we could have a massive 4 inch ice storm that destroys all the trees. That would make us somewhat fire resistant.

Yes. It’s been an absolute nightmare. We have power for now but probly not for long once the ZR starts up again. Hopefully we get the southerly winds to mix us out fast compared to everyone else like usual. One of the few times I’m happy for it. So many structures ruined like our gazebo and we won’t be able to afford one til who knows when.

I’m sorry man, no good comes from ZR.

Not much of a northern stream this winter. And even less so going forward as the MJO constructively interferes w/ the Niño base state (orbits through phase 7-8-1 late this month into Feb).

Next winter should have more northern stream even in the absence of a niña (+QBO will help with that to some extent as will the lack of a strong niño).

For the PNW, the most impressive aspect of this Arctic event has undoubtedly been the high temps. A few examples.

  • BLI's high of 10 on 1/12 was their coldest January high temp on record, and their second coldest ever after the 9 seen in Dec 1968
  • SEA's high of 22 was their coldest high since Dec 1990, and their coldest January high since 1969
  • SLE's high of 23 was their coldest since Dec 1998, and their coldest in January since 1979
  • Omak's high of 1 was their coldest since January 1969

Temperature falling in North Bend after not quite making it above freezing. @TT-SEA would know better from experience but based on models I don’t see how we get through this one without a fairly significant ice event. Best hope is precip is light and east wind eats up the moisture and temp stays relatively steady.   Don't think it will drop to the low 20s or anything like that.
